Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI DPF (diesel engine)

At Audi, the design of the Avant does not follow a gimmick used by many manufacturers: the wheelbase of the Avant and the sedan is the same, so miracles are not to be expected in the interior, more precisely in the rear seats. The A4 Avant is a true A4 here, which means (unless there are very low passengers in the front) in the back (on long journeys) there is more room than just for children, as knee space quickly runs out. Four adults (or even five) will be able to decently sit in it, but for something more than short trips or a trip, say, to the airport, it will not be enough.

In this respect, the A4 Avant does not deviate from the competition, but it must be admitted that it may be surpassed by some (even its own) competitors who do not otherwise belong to the prestigious section of the upper middle class. But there is no direct connection between centimeters (inside and outside) and the euro in cars anyway? too much depends on the badge on the nose? , this is neither surprising nor bad. So it is in such machines.

The same goes for the essence of this Avant, i.e. the rear of the van. We have seen (rarely, but we) better, we have seen (quite often) more, and there have been fewer successful combinations. The A4 Avant is one of the best compromises, but design and usability prevail. The last sentence may seem strange at first glance, but it should be understood that size and usability are not necessarily related. The A4 Avant has a mostly average, even rather shallow trunk, and its luggage organization means it doesn't matter if you load it to the top or carry only a bag of groceries in it.

In both cases, the luggage can be securely secured so that it does not slide around the trunk during more active maneuvers with the car. And if we add to this the ideally designed retractable roller shutter (which can be fully opened or folded) and (optionally) the electric opening of the tailgate (which, however, failed here and there and had to be helped by a hand in the final conclusion), it is clear that the A4 Avant – a useful van with a large enough trunk for everyday use (which also includes occasional family vacation trips). And if there are even more requirements, you can load the trunk up to the ceiling (you have to use the safety net behind the rear seats, of course) or you can lower the rear bench and really load the Avanta completely. But for car owners of this type, doing this all the time is unlikely.

An otherwise similar story, only in a slightly different form, applies to the engine: 140 diesel “horses” are practically flexible, soundproof and quiet in terms of vibration, only for sporty demands or a heavily loaded car there is not enough power. . Competitors know how to offer more, but it's true that you can also consider a more powerful, 170-horsepower version of the Avant. But since (again) most drivers drive quietly and the car is rarely fully loaded, this thinking is more theoretical. Buyers will be delighted with acceptable fuel consumption, which in the test was about nine liters, and in slow driving - about seven liters per 100 kilometers.

32 isn't much for an Avant like this, but keep in mind that neither cruise control nor parking assistance come standard. A moderately equipped A4 Avant will cost you just under 40k, and like the test car (including navigation and MMI system), it will cost well over 43k. But prestige (and Audi is still a prestige brand) has never been cheap. .

evaluation

  • The A4 Avant is a good compromise between looks and trunk space (which should be the main feature of such cars), especially given the competition in the prestigious upper middle class. You just have to come to terms with the price.
