How does a clutch work? What it is?

A clutch is a device that connects shafts together to transmit torque. Thanks to this, it unloads the engine during its operation. It is recommended to press it when turning the car on and off. At the same time, avoid driving on the half-coupling, i.e. only partially depressed pedal, as this can lead to faster wear of the disk of the device. However, nothing prevents them from being pressed, for example, when stopping at a traffic light. It is also important that this is not a particularly delicate mechanism and you do not have to worry too much about it.

How is the clutch in a car?

An automobile clutch consists of three main elements. It:

  • bearing (directly connected to the pedal);
  • machine pressure;
  • shield (the most frequently replaced element). 

The disc has spikes attached with overhead rivets, so that the car does not twitch when starting off. They must be characterized by high resistance to abrasion. It is worth noting that this part is often replaced instead of the entire clutch. However, in most cases it is better to replace the entire mechanism. This will result in a much higher level of security.

Types of automotive clutches - each manufacturer creates its own

Each car manufacturer makes slightly different clutches. Even for different car models, they can be built a little differently. They can be divided into wet and dry, but in the case of cars, we are actually talking only about the latter. Several types can be named:

  •  friction clutch. Such mechanisms may have different designs, but they are among the most commonly used in automobiles;
  • electromagnetic clutch with corrugated discs that create pressure by means of an electromagnetic field;
  • hydrotransformer, which works thanks to the liquid in a closed circuit.

Each type of clutch works a little differently and performs better in different conditions. Remember that before you buy your dream car, you should also think about choosing this part and adapting its features to your driving.

What is a clutch release in a car?

Disconnecting clutch periodically connects the shafts. It can be controlled in two ways: externally or automatically via rotation speed (or direction of rotation). These types of mechanisms include friction, which is controlled by torque. They can also be used as centrifugal or one-way clutches. Thus, it can be said that in most vehicles there is a device that can be described as separate. Are there other types of this device? Oh sure. We turn to non-separable couplings.

Non-separable clutch - how does this type of clutch work?

Such a coupling combines an active and a passive element. This means that while it is running, there is no way to turn them off, as the name suggests. Permanent couplings are divided into:

  • hard;
  • self-regulating;
  • susceptible. 

It is worth noting that such an element of the car is usually mechanical equipment, without additional electronics. Each of the listed types can be divided into additional types and subtypes, but if you do not deal with mechanics, this should not be important to you.

Clutch in a car - what to look for?

As a driver, you have the biggest impact on the durability of your car's clutch. How to properly care for them? First of all, avoid riding with a half-clutch and always press the pedal all the way down. Also pay attention to the action itself. If you feel that the pedal is getting stiff, you may need to replace the clutch soon. If the vehicle starts to twitch more, you may also need to go to the mechanic. Remember that by depressing the clutch when starting off, you prolong the life of the engine.
