Bitumen-polymer anticorrosive "Cordon". Simple and inexpensive!

Properties and characteristics

The polymer-bitumen anticorrosive agent of the Kordon brand in its original state is a viscous sticky mass of black or dark brown color with a specific odor reminiscent of hydrogen sulfide (an indirect recommendation to use a protective mask or respirator). This consistency is convenient, since it does not require the introduction of any additives (as we will learn from the reviews below, this is not entirely true), and can be applied with a brush or roller up to 120 ... 150 mm wide directly on the prepared surface.

The presence of bitumen and synthetic rubber in the composition of the anticorrosive agent "Kordon" provides the finished surface with gloss and good anti-adhesion from external mechanical particles of gravel, pebbles or coarse sand. Therefore, a number of motorists in their reviews believe that Cordon does a good job with the functions inherent in anti-gravel compositions. The physico-chemical properties of the composition are preserved up to temperatures of at least 70 ... 800C, therefore, Cordon is also positioned as a means of protecting the moving parts of a car drive.

Application

All manufacturers (the main one is CJSC PoliComPlast, Moscow region) strongly do not recommend the use of Cordon in combination with other anticorrosive protection agents. It is indicated that in this case it is impossible to guarantee good adhesion of the coating to the metal. Before use, the surface should be cleaned of dust, loose particles, oils and grease. Next do:

  1. Application of the first layer of anticorrosive as a base. This layer must be thoroughly dried for 4 ... 6 hours; due to flammability, forced drying is not recommended.
  2. Since it is necessary to apply the layer with a brush or roller (PolyComPlast also produces an aerosol version of Cordon, but it is not in great demand among motorists), after drying, you need to inspect the surface. There is a possibility of cracks, the cause of which is considered to be an unacceptable temperature difference between the ambient air and anticorrosive. Cracks are sealed with any auto-sealant, except anaerobic. For the final sealing of the coating should take at least a day.

  1. The original composition of Cordon is mixed. So the manufacturer; in fact, anticorrosive will have to be heated on a stove or (which is less effective) in a water bath. During the heating process, the anticorrosive agent may ignite, which is not a defect. It is necessary to let the surface layer, which has a greenish color, burn out, after which the burning will stop; this will not affect the quality of the coating.
  2. The layer is dried for at least 8 hours, while it is advisable to avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes in the room where the treatment is performed. If required, the treatment is repeated, but also with an interval of 8 hours. The minimum recommended thickness of the anti-corrosion coating cannot be less than 1 mm.
  3. After handling, thoroughly wash hands and used tools. It is necessary to store anticorrosive in a container without access to air and direct sunlight at a temperature not lower than 50C.

use Features

Experienced motorists who have been using Cordon anticorrosive for a long time note the following product features:

  • It is not recommended to cover with this anticorrosive agent using an airbrush: the consumption of the composition will increase, and at the same time the probability of uneven thickness of the coating will increase, which is due to temperature fluctuations - both in Cordon itself and in the room to which the treatment is performed. Therefore, the time savings are only apparent. In extreme cases, Cordon can be diluted with a small amount of gasoline.
  • When the room temperature is below 50It is better not to use anticorrosive at all: high viscosity and rapid thickening leads to the need to periodically stop processing and heat up the still unused Cordon. To stop the burning of the composition, the jar with the product should be covered with a wet rag, it will stop the access of oxygen.
  • The appearance of a fully cured coating should resemble glass mass with a characteristic sheen; a different appearance indicates that the complete polymerization of the oil-bitumen mastic has not yet occurred.

  • For the treatment of external surfaces, the effect of Cordon can be enhanced by adding crumb rubber to the composition - this enhances the noise-absorbing effect of the product.
  • If it is necessary to wash off the mastic, gasoline or white spirit is used. This work is recommended to be carried out in a room equipped with personal fire extinguishing equipment.
  • For multi-layer processing, the interval time indicated in the instructions for applying the next layer - no more than an hour - is not enough, and can only be implemented for the spray version.

The price of Cordon anticorrosive, depending on the manufacturer of the goods, ranges from 160 ... 175 rubles. for 1 kg. The option in the form of a spray will cost more: from 180 ... 200 rubles. for a can (the price of Cordon in an euroballon is from 310 rubles).
