A few years ago, everything was better - cars became lighter and more pleasant to drive. And, of course, these faded memory models were more economical. Whether all this is true and where the progress actually is, a comparison between representatives of different generations of the three brands will clarify. In the first part of the series, ams.bg will present you with a comparison between the BMW 2002 tii and 118i.

When you get behind the wheel of a 2002 BMW, your eyes begin to dance a little bewildered, circling the entire car. Instead of empty space, the view through the front or rear window meets the fenders or the trunk lid. Frameless side windows, thin roof columns, lightweight, rigid figure. Compared to it, the 118i we arrived with looks like a sheet metal cage with minimal visibility. Two cars from different eras met to test some readers' claim that older cars are more fuel efficient.

Tense young man or grandfather?

The self-propelled grandfather of 1971 is slim, without wrinkles and folds - like a young man in puberty. BMW redesigned it with the original unused bodywork so that the veteran would actually be comparable to a new modern car, not some wrinkled oldie.

And how the 2002 tii starts up, how it absorbs gas, how its powerful engine sings! Thanks to the injection system, the two-liter four-cylinder unit develops 130 hp. s. that create a sense of motivation as you would expect from a sports model. Our former fellow examiners appear before our spiritual eyes, we imagine how they chased this little terrier, freed from the leash at the sign of the end of the settlement, as they carried him along secondary roads, then without speed limits.

On the conveyor

The two-liter unit 118i offers 143 horsepower, but half of that appears to be on sick leave. With great difficulty, the "unit" follows its ancestor, infinitely far from the infectious traction of a compact sports model. This is not surprising, because even at the maximum load in 2002 tii will be lighter than an empty "unit".

The new one may not be nimble enough, but it's easy to work with. The turns, which we overcome in sweat on our forehead, squeezing the thin steering wheel by 02, "one" is perceived as honey and butter thanks to the precise power steering and precise suspension operation. As for the stunning 2002 tii at high speed, today hardly anyone will grieve about them.

Dear BMW designers, you have improved road dynamics. What about suspension comfort? Auto motor und sport complained about this back in 1971 in a 2002 test, and today the "unit" is almost no better. Where is the progress? However, the body designers have succeeded in reducing aerodynamic noise – at 180 km/h, earplugs are no longer needed.

Additionally

Let's not forget the equipment. Previously, there was only radio and ventilation, today there are entertainment systems with a TV, MP3 player and navigation devices, as well as automatic air conditioning with self-regulating zones. Not to mention the power and heated seats. Additional safety systems such as emergency braking, airbags and ESP ensure safety. Compared to the “unit”, 2002 looks almost bare.

Maniacs of 70s models can swear all they want for their comfortable obesity, but there is no reason to accuse them of being greedy. For comparable driving style, the 118i is content with an average of almost two liters less than the 100 tii, which is 2002 kilometers less. Tell me something about the old economic days?

If there's one thing we want to bring back from the past, it's air and light-filled bodies - to feel like we're once again merging with the landscape, and not just passing by.
