What is double overtaking and why is it dangerous

Overtaking a car is a necessary measure, or it seems to be something natural. Sometimes there is a double pass. However, everything is not so clear, since in addition to the presence of the circumstances of the driver, there are also third-party factors.

What is double overtaking and why is it dangerous

How is double overtaking different from normal

Normal overtaking can be considered a combination of three successive stages: the car is rebuilt into the oncoming lane to bypass the car in front, overtakes and gets back to the previous lane. However, motorists often confuse such concepts as overtaking and advancing. In order to avoid misunderstandings with the traffic police, remember that the second term is when cars move in their own lanes, but one car pulls ahead without leaving for someone else's lane.

Double overtaking qualifies as the participation of three or more cars, and there are three types:

  • one car overtakes several cars;
  • a few decide to overtake and move like a “locomotive”;
  • a string of cars overtakes another of the same kind.

In such situations, it is difficult to correctly assess the situation on the track, and therefore accidents often occur.

Can you double overtake?

The term double overtaking is not in the SDA. But, for example, paragraph 11 of the Rules says that the driver must certainly make sure that there is no transport in the oncoming lane. Explanations to the rule are also spelled out - you cannot overtake if:

  • the driver already sees that overtaking cannot be completed without interfering with other road users;
  • the car behind has already started to make a detour before your car;
  • the car in front that you intended to overtake began to do so in relation to the car in front of it.

The described rule paints a picture of double overtaking without calling it that. Thus, a detour by a “locomotive” contradicts clause 11 of the traffic rules.

But which maneuver will be considered correct? It is enough to adhere to the rules and act “on the contrary” - you can overtake if there are no such prohibitions as:

  • the presence of a nearby pedestrian crossing or intersections;
  • the maneuver is performed on the bridge;
  • there is a prohibition sign for overtaking;
  • there is a railway crossing nearby;
  • there are "blind zones" in the form of turns, lifting sections and others;
  • a car is moving ahead that turned on the left turn signal;
  • the presence of an oncoming car.

The rules do not say that you cannot overtake several cars at once, but there is a ban on overtaking by a “locomotive”. With the proviso that overtaking will not interfere with the movement of oncoming cars.

Set punishment

Since there is no direct clause in the SDA on double overtaking, therefore, the violation and the amount of the fine are seen in Article 12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. It lists violations:

  • if overtaking is made in the area of a pedestrian crossing, and according to the article it is read that the driver did not give way to people, then a fine is charged in the amount of 1500 rubles;
  • when creating obstacles for an overtaken car, the driver will have to pay from 1000 to 1500 rubles.

If the offense is committed repeatedly, then the driver may be deprived of a driver's license for up to a year, and if the camera recorded the maneuver, then a fine of 5000 rubles is issued.

If overtaking was forced in the direction of travel, the driver will have to prove the existence of an emergency. In this case, a video recorder or other means of video and photo recording will help.
