What are exhaust cutouts? – YourRepair

When you're looking to modify your car in the aftermarket, it's always nice when you find something that improves functionality as well as aesthetics. Since you won't often improve both, this can be a big problem for reducers. But you're in luck if you're planning on adding an exhaust cutout.

Exhaust cutouts can be foreign to many drivers, so let's first define what they are. An exhaust pipe is a device installed in the exhaust system that can bypass the muffler and essentially function as a straight exhaust pipe. Drivers can choose when they want their exhaust to fire at the push of a button, often on the left side of the steering column.

How does an exhaust cut work?

The exhaust cutout is installed between the manifold and muffler inside the exhaust system. This is a Y-pipe setup, so exhaust gases can flow through two different regions. One part leads to the muffler and exhaust pipe. The other region will depend on your modification. Some exhaust cutouts will have smoke coming out almost immediately after the exhaust cutout. Others may connect to the exhaust pipe separately from the muffler.

A properly installed exhaust pipe cutout is electrically connected to the dashboard. From there, the driver can open and close the exhaust pipe at the push of a button. When you open the exhaust valve, the exhaust gases bypass the muffler, making a lot of noise. You can then smoothly close the tailpipe cutout to blend in audibly with the rest of the cars near you. An exhaust cutout makes it easy to switch from race car sound to conventional engine sound.

Benefits of an Exhaust Cutout

As mentioned, the tailpipe cutout benefits drivers with its functionality and aesthetics. Since the cutout is under the car, you might be asking, "What aesthetic?" Well, we see it as part of the cutaway sound. Many gears tune their favorite machine to enhance the roaring sound. (For example, with muffler removal or exhaust tips.) With an exhaust cutout, you have the ability to make a roaring sound at the touch of your fingertips.

In addition to an aesthetic upgrade, a tailpipe cut can improve the performance of your vehicle. Simply put, the faster the exhaust gases are pushed out of the engine, the more horsepower your car will have. When your exhaust valve is open, you bypass the muffler and increase the rate at which exhaust gases leave your car. Thus, the open cut of the exhaust pipe increases the power of the car. Thus, the cutout of the exhaust pipe has two big advantages for any gearbox looking to improve their ride.
