Dacia Logan 1.6 MPI winner

You will not buy a Dacia Logan because of the short-term fascination with the disassembled tin box and will not drool over it. You buy it because you can comfortably drive a larger and, above all, a new car from point A to point B, but you don't have to give up a third of your salary for endless months. Yes, buy on demand, not out of vanity!

The history of the Romanian Dacia is as interesting as Hollywood itself would put it on the screens. Since the end of the last millennium, a controlling stake in the plant has been owned by Renault. Therefore, it is not surprising that the French decided to set up a plant in the city of Pitesy to jump (mostly) to underdeveloped and emerging markets in a five thousand euro car. A bold but feasible plan, provided that it must meet all safety and environmental requirements and not be small? Pay attention to an important fact: Logan is not just a car made for modest money almost entirely by hand in a Romanian factory (cheap labor!), but it hides much more among the body's many welds.

Making a car that costs only 1.550.000 tolar in the basic version in Slovenia is not as easy as we imagine. I had to change the whole philosophy of creating cars!

In the late 80s, Renault management realized that motorists from the United States, (developed) Europe and Japan had the vast majority of the world's automotive sheet metal in their garages, but these markets were oversaturated and unattractive due to low growth, while XNUMX percent the rest of the world of hungry cars. Read: Most of the world wants a simple, cheap and durable car! And therefore, already from the first line of designers in the Technocentre, a development center near Paris, where Logan was created entirely under the tutelage of Renault, they had to develop the cheapest product possible.

And call it Dacia Logan (from Renault) in some markets and Renault Logan in other markets where Renault has yet to strengthen its position. In Slovenia, of course, under the Dacia brand, which in case of a bad market reaction can still be referred to as being only a Romanian branch. Unfortunately, we cannot avoid feeling that even Renault people have not yet fully believed in this project. If something goes wrong, Dacia will be to blame (and bad light won't fall on the French brand), but if it sold well, we'd boast that the Renault lettering is for a reason. It sounds something like this: “He would not run away. ... "

So how do you save money and still make money? The first thing we have already mentioned is factories in countries with cheap labor and cheaper materials (Romania, later Russia, Morocco, Colombia and Iran) and then using computer design (thus skipping prototype production and of course tools for it). ), Logan saved about 20 million euros), using a traditional type of sheet metal, limiting the number of edges and wrinkles on the body (simplification of tool manufacturing, greater reliability, easier production and, of course, lower cost tool manufacturing), use of already proven parts from other models, and in particular the connection with local suppliers, which simplifies logistics. Everything is simple, right?

Well it’s not. As you may have read, the Logan has been designed as a low-budget car since its first design step, but it still needs to deliver basic things like safety, environmental friendliness and attractiveness. ... Did they succeed? If we say that Logan is not handsome, we will not shoot past him, but he is far from ugly. If we compare him with his sister Thalia (by the way: the most expensive Logan is 250 thousandth cheaper than the cheapest Thalia with the 1.4 Authentique label), then we can confirm with a clear conscience that he is much more obedient.

For example, due to cheaper production, the rearview mirrors and side rails are symmetrical (fewer tools) and the bumpers are the same in all versions (regardless of trim). Behind most of the rear, which sells much better in southern countries, hides a 510-liter trunk, which is more difficult to reach for two reasons. Firstly, the trunk can only be opened with a key, and secondly, it is a smaller hole through which we push suitcases into the black hole.

And if we have test Samsonite travel bags in different sizes in the office to measure the true (not theoretical) usability of a suitcase, I can say that Logan surprisingly ate everything! Otherwise, it took us 15 minutes to sort them out, to then close the back door (Logan has - remember, comrades? - two rails that sink in the trunk and hit luggage, which has been the case with new cars for a long time. did not see) but it went. Nothing commendable!

Friends asked me how he drove, from what materials and whether any part of the car remained in my hands. First I had to explain to them not to underestimate Logan because he doesn't deserve it. The materials aren't the best, or the prettiest, but you don't have to blush in front of a thin mother-in-law you don't get along with, and the kids won't abandon their mother because of Logan. The Logan handles very similarly to the Clio, which is not surprising as the front axle is very similar to the Clio, while the rear axle is the work of the Renault-Nissan alliance and is therefore borrowed from the Modus and Micra. .

In more developed markets, the Logan also has stabilizers, but on destroyed roads it is only available without them. At the same time, the car leans a little more, but more effectively swallows many bumps in the road. The gearbox is similar to the Laguna II and Mégane II, with a slightly longer gear lever travel, but very soft and smooth!

Although the first three gear ratios are better for jumping in favor of shorter ones (ha, we can vividly imagine a fully loaded Logan in Russian Siberia or the Iranian desert, preferably with a rope-filled trunk, where at lower speeds it bounces towards a new event. ), even the more gentle half will easily cope with them precisely because of the gentleness of the leadership.

The bike is an old friend from Thalia and Kangoo, a 1-hp, 6-litre, eight-valve, single-injection unit that's snappy enough for the highway and economical that you won't have a headache at today's gas prices. stations. Interestingly, it smells best of 90 octane gasoline and also assimilates 95 and 87 octane gasoline easily! Of course, Renault also boasts that in some markets you also save on visits to service engineers, since this requires an oil change, spark plugs and air filter only after 91 30 kilometers. Slovenia is also among them.

The only serious complaint about the engine is the volume at higher speeds, when fuel consumption also rises to 12 liters. While it doesn't have sixteen valves, twin cams, variable valve timing, or the latest turbocharger that we've already taken as standard in more modern cars, the Logan engine is a perfectly worthy tech accessory that makes you sound comfortable and comfortable enough. . at lower speeds. You travel all over the world to ask yourself: “Why should I buy all the equipment if I don’t need it at all for traffic jams on my way to or from work? !! ? "

You know, even when you get behind the wheel, you definitely know that you are in Renault. Oh, I'm sorry, Dacia. The ergonomics of the driver's seat are so poor that you might think you are sitting in the Clio. Similar to Clio (from which, in addition to the steering wheel, took over the steering system, steering wheel levers, rear brakes, door openers. The driver and pedals are close, so you will always feel like you are made at home with too long legs and too short arms.

Well, do not be alarmed, you are doing well (thanks mom and dad!), Only Renault's ergonomics remained. ... It's bad not to use a juicier Slovenian word. Therefore, I am not surprised that during the photo shoot I had a black spot on my right leg, since during dynamic driving I had to additionally lean on the center console in order not to slip off the seat, while recognizing that both the predictable chassis and the precise transmission and reliable brakes provide a daring, yet safe ride. Only the power steering can be more indirect so you can feel how much friction there is between the wheels and the road.

We felt a little sad in the editorial because it would be really interesting to experience a poorly equipped Logan, and not sit in the most equipped version! Well, there's still time for the cheapest, and in the Laureate version we've dabbled in central locking, dual airbags, a CD radio, mechanical A/C, power steering, electric sliding windshields, ABS,. . Together with additional equipment, such a Logan gained almost 2 million tolars, which is still very profitable in terms of size and equipment. And while we watched, skimmed, and scratched the test car for errors, Ilunescu, a Romanian worker who had a bad day right on this car, missed it! We were surprised by the quality.

The joints are flawless, the gaps between the parts are even, and the crickets have clearly gone on vacation longer! Of course, it should be understood that the plastic inside is not the best and not the most beautiful, but many things are made from one piece in order to reduce the cost of production. Thus, pickpockets will be above excessively hard plastic, aesthetes above a beautiful gray interior, techniques above the spring when opening the trunk, where the negligent will feel the edge of the chest with his chin. ... But let's stand on our feet, because everyone would like to have a Ferrari in the garage (right, Matevž?), But we cannot afford it. And, frankly, in Slovenia, tin is many times greater than our capabilities.

Have you ever thought that you live in an old stuffy apartment without air conditioning, and in your car you are pampered with the latest CD radio (which also reads MP3) and dual channel air conditioning that cools the heated leather seats? And if we reuse our brain cells, we come to the conclusion: we spend much more time in the apartment, so it would be more rational to create favorable conditions for life there (it never hurts to read a little) than in the car, Right?

Dacia Logan is very similar to what we once wrote about Japanese and Korean cars, and in the future we will probably talk about Chinese and Indian cars, a lot of (new) cars for a reasonable price. Compared to Thalia, I no longer see any reason why I would buy a more expensive Renault model, and besides, it surpasses its competitors (Kalos, Accent, Fabia, Corsa, ...) both in centimeters and in tailoring equipment. You only have to openly answer one thing: is a new Logan worth more, say, for 2 million tolars, or a lightly driven, lower-middle-class, three-year-old second-hand car? It is worth thinking carefully!

Overall rating (243/420)

  • Among the new cars, it is difficult to find a car, the purchase of which would be more rational. But since we rarely think completely soberly, at least about cars, Logan will have to prove himself. He is already in our editorial office!

  • Exterior (11/15)

It's not the prettiest car on the road, but it's built harmoniously. See Page 53 for more information!

  • Interior (90/140)

He gets a lot of points because of the roominess and equipment, but he loses a lot because of the driving position and some because of the poor materials.

  • Engine, transmission (24

    / 40)

The engine is quite suitable for this car (what a simple diesel - without a turbocharger! - would be even better), and the gearbox is one of the best parts of the car.

  • Driving performance (51

    / 95)

Mostly he is confused by the small legroom and too indirect power steering, but Logan's position is quite predictable.

  • Performance (18/35)

Oh, thanks to its capabilities, you can't sleep worse at night!

  • Security (218/45)

He is not the champion in this class for active and passive safety, but for this money he still has good reserves.

  • Economy

Low price of the basic version, decent warranty and, above all, an extensive service network.
