Daewoo Musso 2.9 TD ELX

Of course, there are several factors associated with cost or price: quality and durability, among others. But it is not always the case! For a reasonable price, we can get a decent SUV - with very solid performance, endurance within the normal range, good driving performance on various surfaces, with sufficient comfort and ease of operation.

One such compromise is definitely the Ssangyo…sorry Daewoo Musso. Sorry, making mistakes is human, especially if it's not a mistake. The Korean Ssangyong also owns the Korean Daewoo for the second year in a row. They changed the labels and gave him a new face.

The new mask, of course, now wears the Daewoo badge, and the vertical slits are somewhat reminiscent of the legend among SUVs (Jeep). There is still the Ssangyong label on the steering wheel and radio, which also means there are very few changes on the Muss. They kept its good qualities, added new products and cheerfully forward.

The biggest novelty is the good old inline five-cylinder Mercedes diesel, this time assisted by an exhaust gas turbocharger. Thus, Musso gained strength, became more dexterous, faster and even more convincing. Until 2000 rpm, nothing shocking happens yet, but then, when the turbine kicks in, rear-wheel drive can be very lively. As far as possible, with a car that is almost empty (almost two tons).

Even the final speed is very solid for such a huge mass. The engine is a proven diesel classic with swirl chamber fuel injection, two valves per cylinder and an aftercooler between the turbine and intake valves. The cold needs time to warm up, already a little warm, it ignites perfectly without it.

It has a built-in safety switch that allows ignition only when the clutch pedal is depressed. This, of course, is on average a loud diesel and moderately gluttonous. The volume of the engine itself is not even such a problem, all the more worried about the resonance of the entire drive, possibly including the power take-off shafts, which cause an unpleasant resonance at a certain number of revolutions. One of the Mussa's downsides is the gearbox, which is uncomfortably stiff, sticks, and doesn't work accurately. This is the end of basic grudges.

In fact, Musso as a whole is just the right combination. It commands respect for its size. They respectfully step back on the road! With a fairly boxy but far from boring shape, it's no different from the average SUV. Due to its solidity it gives the impression of durability and insensitivity, and with a fairly soft suspension it also provides great comfort.

Riding on uneven surfaces is above average comfortable, also thanks to the large balloon tires, which do not feel particularly pleasant. However, they later proved to be very tough on the field, even in the snow.

The Mussa, like most SUVs, needs to climb high. This means that the car has a good view of the surroundings. The driver is greeted by an (too) large steering wheel and an easily transparent instrument panel. The rotary knob for turning on all-wheel drive is the only feature that needs to be mastered. Which is not difficult.

The first stage also engages power transmission to the front wheels (possibly while driving), and you need to stop to engage a lower gear. You cannot do damage even if you make a mistake, as the hydraulics do not switch until it is safe and possible to do so. Therefore, the indicator lamps on the instrument panel light up (or flash) as a warning. For better traction on very slippery surfaces, an automatic rear differential lock comes to the rescue. That's all there is to know.

Of course, not everything is perfect in Muss. The spoiler above the rear window creates a vortex of air that throws all the dirt directly onto the rear window. Fortunately, he has a janitor there. The antenna is electrically movable and too vulnerable to protruding branches. To avoid breaking it, turn off the radio. The shelf on the armature is intertwined and does not hold items. It has two can openings that are also intertwined. ...

On the other hand, it offers a lot of space and comfort. The trunk is gradually expanding. It has an efficient semi-automatic air conditioner. It has reliable brakes that brake evenly and controllably, even without ABS. It has useful power steering and solid handling. The engine is proven, powerful. And this diesel, as befits a real SUV! And finally, it has an undemanding all-wheel drive, which is sufficient in critical situations and in most cases.

For locality or not, that is the question! Musso has great value for its price. Good performance, comfort and reliability are also important. Where you are going with him is not so important. But it's good to know that Musso won't disappoint you.

evaluation

  • Musso lost nothing under the new label he acquired earlier. It's still a sturdy and comfortable SUV. With a new, more powerful engine, this is also more convincing. A lot of cars for a solid price!
