Freeway Range: Ford Mustang Mach-E vs. VW ID.4 GTX vs. Hyundai Ioniq 5. Weakest = Hyundai

German company Nextmove has road-tested the power consumption and family crossover range. The experiment was to drive freeway at "trying to keep 100/130/150 km/h" speeds. Among the three models tested, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 performed the worst, the Ford Mustang Mach-E the best, and the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX in the middle.

The power reserve of electric vehicles on the highway is 150 km / h.

The tests were carried out in good weather and at high temperatures, therefore under optimal driving conditions. At other times of the year, the results may be slightly different, but the summer experiment makes a lot of sense - this is the time of the year we travel the most and most of all. TO "I'm trying to keep 150 km / h" machines will work:

  1. Ford Mustang Mach-E 4X (AWD) – 332 km (61 percent of WLTP in 540 units)
  2. Volkswagen ID.4 GTX (AWD) - 278 kilometers (60 percent WLTP out of 466 units)
  3. Hyundai Ioniq 5 (AWD) - 247 kilometers (57 percent of the WLTP of 430 units).

It is worth noting that in all cases the real range for "I'm trying to hold 150 km / h" was about 3/5 WLTP:

The previously used conditional mode ("would pass", not "pass") follows from the fact that people from Nextmove discharged the battery not to zero, but only to a certain (rather low) level, they also recorded the energy consumption of cars and on this basis they calculated maximum range cars when energy is completely depleted. Therefore, if any of the models dynamically manipulates the buffer or detects that it is being tested by Nextmove / Nyland, the results will be different.

Energy consumption and luggage capacity

What was the power consumption mentioned? Here are the results:

  1. Ford Mustang Mach-E – 26,6 kWh / 100 km with 88 kWh battery / Volkswagen ID.4 GTX – 26,6 kWh / 100 km with 77 kWh battery,
  2. Hyundai Ioniq 5 - 27,8 kWh / 100 km with a 72,6 kWh battery.

All cars were all-wheel drive, Hyundai and Volkswagen - with 20-inch wheels, Ford Mustang Mach-E - with 19-inch wheels. The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX was the cheapest and smallest on the list, a model on the border between the C- and D-SUV segments. For more fun, this the smallest model also had the largest rear luggage compartment: 543 liters.. The luggage compartment volume of the Ford Mustang Mach-E is 402 liters (+80 liters in the front, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is 527 liters (+24 liters in the front).

The most energy efficient Hyundai Ioniq 5 also took the least time to charge. But whether this will be a sufficient plus when traveling is the topic of a separate article 🙂
