What are magnets used for?

There are many ways to use a magnet. To illustrate their versatility, here are a few examples:

computer memory

Small circular magnetic disks called "ferrite cores" are used in some computers as magnetic memory. Each core in a computer refers to one bit of information in the computer's memory.

Lifting Laser Cutting Steel

What are magnets used for?A type of magnet called a "hand magnet" is used to lift laser cut steel from the original steel sheet after it has been cut. The extended magnet handle allows the user to carry the sheet at arm's length, preventing any injury caused by the sharp edges of the freshly cut steel.

Training

What are magnets used for?Horseshoe magnets can be used in education to teach students about the magnetic field using iron filings.

Guitar Pickups

What are magnets used for?Magnets are used inside guitar pickups to create different tones.

The magnet is placed inside the pickup, a piece of wire is wound around it, creating a magnetic field. Whenever a guitar string vibrates in this magnetic field, the coil detects the change and then creates a voltage, thus producing sound.

welding

What are magnets used for?Tack magnets can be used to hold pieces of ferromagnetic materials in the tack position. Tack welding involves a series of small welds to securely align pieces of metal before completing the final weld. Magnets can help weld together things like steel gates, metal stair treads, and bike frames.

Signs on the roof of the car

What are magnets used for?Magnetic mounting pads can be used to attach signs to car roofs and are especially useful when the sign needs to be easily attached and removed without damaging the car. This is often useful for promotional purposes.
