1.4 MPi engine - the most important information!

The line of units equipped with a multi-point injection system was developed by the Volkswagen concern. Motors with this technology are installed on most car models of the German concern, including Skoda and Seat. What characterizes the 1.4 MPi engine from VW? Check!

Engine 1.4 16V and 8V - basic information

This power unit was produced in two versions (60 and 75 hp) and a torque of 95 Nm in the 8 V and 16 V system. It was installed on Skoda Fabia cars, as well as Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza. For the 8-valve version, a chain is installed, and for the 16-valve version, a timing belt.

This engine is installed on small cars, medium cars and minibuses. The chosen model belongs to the EA211 family and its extension, 1.4 TSi, is very similar in design.

Possible problems with the device

The operation of the engine is not too expensive. Among the most frequent breakdowns, an increase in engine oil consumption has been noted, but this can be directly related to the user's driving style. The disadvantage is also not very pleasant sound of the unit. A 16V motor is considered less faulty.

The design of the four-cylinder engine consisted of a lightweight aluminum block and cylinders with cast-iron inner liners. The crankshaft and connecting rods are made from new forged steel.

Design solutions in the 1.4 MPi engine

Here, the cylinder stroke was increased to 80 mm, but the bore was narrowed to 74,5 mm. As a result, the unit from the E211 family has become as much as 24,5 kg lighter than its predecessor from the EA111 series. In the case of the 1.4 MPi engine, the block is always tilted back 12 degrees, and the exhaust manifold is always located at the back near the firewall. Thanks to this procedure, compatibility with the MQB platform was ensured.

Multipoint fuel injection was also used. This can be important information for drivers who are particularly interested in making their drive economical - it allows you to connect the gas system.

Specifics of EA211 family drives

A characteristic feature of the units from the EA211 group is their MQB platform friendliness. The latter is part of a strategy to create single, modular car designs with a transverse front engine. There is also front-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive.

Common features of the 1.4 MPi engine and related units

This group includes not only MPi blocks, but also TSi and R3 blocks. They have quite similar specifics and differ in details. The exact technical specification of the individual variants is achieved through specific design measures, such as the removal of variable valve timing or the use of turbochargers of different capacities. There is also a reduction in the number of cylinders. 

The EA 211 is the successor to the EA111 engines. During the use of the predecessors of the 1.4 MPi engine, there were serious problems associated with oil combustion and short circuits in the timing chain.

Operation of the 1.4 MPi engine - what should I pay attention to when using it?

Unfortunately, the most frequently reported problems with the engine include a fairly high fuel consumption in the city. However, it is worth noting that the problem can be solved by installing HBO. Among the malfunctions there is also a failure of the cylinder head gasket, damage to the timing chain. Pneumothorax and faulty valve hydraulics also cause problems.

Block 1.4 MPi, regardless of version, usually enjoys a good reputation. Its construction is rated as solid and the availability of spare parts is high. You don't have to worry about the high cost of having your motorcycle serviced by a mechanic. If you follow the oil change interval and carry out regular checks, the 1.4 MPi engine will definitely run smoothly.
