Fiat 1.9 JTD engine - the most important information about the unit and the Multijet family

The 1.9 JTD engine belongs to the Multijet family. This is a term for a group of engines from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which includes turbodiesel units with direct fuel injection - Common Rail. The 1.9-liter model was also installed on Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Cadillac, Opel, Saab and Suzuki cars.

Basic information about the 1.9 JTD engine

At the very beginning, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the basic information about the drive unit. The 1.9 JTD inline four-cylinder engine was first used in 156 Alfa Romeo 1997. The engine that was installed on it had a power of 104 hp. and was the first passenger car equipped with a diesel engine with a direct fuel injection system.

A few years later other variants of the 1.9 JTD were introduced. They have been installed on Fiat Punto since 1999. The engine had a smaller fixed geometry turbocharger, and the power of the unit was 79 hp. The engine was also used in other models of the Italian manufacturer - Brava, Bravo and Marea. Other versions of the unit in the manufacturer's catalog included these capacities 84 hp, 100 hp, 104 hp, 110 hp. and 113 hp 

Technical data of the Fiat power unit

This engine model used a cast iron block weighing about 125 kg and an aluminum cylinder head with a camshaft equipped with direct acting valves. The exact displacement was 1,919 cc, bore 82 mm, stroke 90,4 mm, compression ratio 18,5.

The second generation engine had an advanced common rail system and was available in seven different power ratings. All versions, except for the 100 hp unit, are equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger. The 8-valve version includes 100, 120 and 130 hp, while the 16-valve version includes 132, 136, 150 and 170 hp. The curb weight was 125 kilograms.

Engine marking in cars of other brands and on which cars it was installed

The 1.9 JTD engine could have been labeled differently. It depended on the marketing decisions of the manufacturers that used it. Opel used the abbreviation CDTi, Saab used the designation TiD and TTiD. The engine was installed on such cars as:

Two-stage turbo version - twin-turbo technology

Fiat decided that from 2007 it would use a new two-stage turbocharged variant. Twin turbos began to be used in 180 hp versions. and 190 hp with a maximum torque of 400 Nm at 2000 rpm. The first of the units was installed on cars of various brands, and the second only on cars of the Fiat concern.

The operation of the drive unit - what to look for?

Cars equipped with this power unit performed well. The workmanship was so good that many of the models are in excellent technical condition despite the years that have passed. 

Despite good reviews, the 1.9 JTD engine has a number of drawbacks. These include issues with the sunroof, exhaust manifold, EGR valve, or manual transmission. Learn more about the most common faults. 

Flap Malfunction 

In diesel engines with 4 valves per cylinder, swirl flaps are most often installed - in one of the two intake ports of each cylinder. The dampers lose their mobility due to contamination of the turbodiesel inlet pipe. 

This happens after a while - the throttle sticks or breaks. As a result, the actuator cannot be accelerated to more than 2000 rpm, and in extreme cases the shutter can even come off and fall into the cylinder. The solution to the problem is to replace the intake manifold with a new one.

Problem with exhaust manifold, EGR and alternator

The intake manifold may be deformed due to high temperatures. Because of this, he ceases to enter the cylinder head. Most often, this is manifested by soot accumulating under the collector, as well as a noticeable smell of automobile exhaust.

EGR problems are caused by a clogged valve. The drive then goes into emergency mode. The solution is to replace the old component with a new one.

Generator failures happen from time to time. In this situation, it stops charging normally. The most common cause is a diode in a voltage regulator. Replacement required.

Manual Transmission Malfunction

During operation of the 1.9 JTD engine, the manual transmission often fails. Despite the fact that it is not a direct element of the engine, its work is connected with the drive unit. Most often, the bearings of the fifth and sixth gears fail. A sign that the system is not working properly is noise and crackling. In the following steps, the transmission shaft may lose alignment and the 5th and 6th gears will stop responding.

Can the 1,9 JTD engine be called reliable?

These setbacks can be quite frustrating, but by knowing they exist, you can prevent them. It is worth noting that, in addition to the above problems, there are no more serious malfunctions during the operation of the 1.9 JTD engine, which can lead, for example, to a major overhaul of the power unit.
