The Great Wall GW4G15 is a modern engine produced in the Celestial Empire as a budget alternative to the Toyota NZ FE series engine, which is equipped with Corolla or Auris of the latest years of production. The low weight and stable torque with economical fuel consumption are responsible for the popularity of the power unit - it is thanks to these features that the motor entered the conveyor production.
Engine history: what made the Great Wall GW4G15 famous?
The popularity of the engine begins with the international conference and exhibition China International Auto Parts Expo (CIAPE), where Great Wall presented to the general public a trio of improved engines with working chambers from 1.0 to 1.5 liters.
The first version of the engine was produced at the beginning of 2006, however, it had a lot of minor flaws that shortened the service life, in connection with which the manufacturing company decided to completely rework the engine. An improved version of the Great Wall GW4G15 was born in 2011 and immediately became famous due to the optimal ratio of power characteristics and production costs: at a relatively low price, Great Wall managed to provide a power unit of reliable assembly and stable dynamics at the time of operation.
The Great Wall GW4G15 engine is characterized by ease of maintenance and a long service life, thanks to which it was able to significantly improve the quality characteristics of budget cars that were equipped with a motor. The direct fuel injection system and modern 16-valve architecture made it possible to maintain stable traction at any engine speed, and fully encapsulated cylinders simplified the procedure and reduced the cost of overhaul.
Compliance with the high Euro 4 emission standard also ensured an increase in sales of the GW4G15 engine - the power unit can often be found on the territory of the Russian Federation or EU countries.
Specifications of the power unit
The GW4G15 is a naturally aspirated, in-line, 16L, 1.5-valve, gasoline engine. Of the technical features of the power unit, a completely aluminum body with cast-iron liners for the cylinders stands out clearly, which made it possible to significantly reduce the total weight of the motor.
The engine is equipped with an electronic valve timing calibration system and a direct fuel injection system, as a result of which the manufacturer has managed to achieve high efficiency with minimal fuel consumption. The average fuel consumption in the combined cycle of this power unit is only 7.2 liters with a stable torque of 97 horsepower.

In practice, this power unit is combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox or an automatic stepless variator in the CVT format. Also, the engine can function to synchronize with boxes from BMW or MINI, however, such projects are found only on custom cars or as a budget alternative to engine repair - installing a Great Wall GW4G15 in a foreign car will cost much less than recapitalizing most German engines.
Weak points in the design: is the motor reliable in principle?
The most characteristic feature of this motor is the effect of "triple" at idle, which is a technical feature of the engine. Replacing spark plugs, adjusting the valve timing or fuel injection will not fix this problem.
It is also worth considering that the engine is designed for measured movement and in the case of aggressive operation of the car, the following problems may appear:
- Rupture of the timing chain drive;
- The appearance of a crunch in the gearbox and grinding of the clutch discs;
- Increased consumption of fuel and technical fluids;
