In 2000, the 1.6-liter engine of the Alpha family debuted on the Hyundai Elantra model. Structurally, it was a classic power unit with distributed fuel injection, an in-line cast-iron cylinder block, an aluminum 16-valve cylinder head with hydraulic compensators and a combined timing drive, it consisted of a belt and a short chain between the camshafts.

The first modifications of this engine developed from 103 to 107 hp. and from 141 to 146 Nm of torque. In 2005, a version with an inlet dephaser appeared, which developed 112 hp. 146 Nm. Such a power unit was installed on the Kia Rio and Cerato, as well as some versions of the Hyundai Elantra.

Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of the G4ED engine

Floating revolutions

This motor is reliable, and the main complaints on the forum are related to its unstable operation due to clogged nozzles, contamination of the throttle assembly or idle speed controller. Also often the culprit is the components of the ignition system: coils and their wires.

Timing belt break

According to the official manual, the timing belt is recommended to be changed only once every 90 thousand km, but many cases of its breakage at a lower mileage are described and the valve usually bends here. And don't forget to renew the chain between the camshafts every two belt changes.

A small oil consumption for this engine may appear already at 150 km, and the reason is usually the wear of the valve stem seals and replacing them always helps. But if the engine consumes more than 000 liter per 1 km, then most likely the rings have already been laid.

Other disadvantages

The weak points of the power unit also include eternally flowing gaskets and oil seals, short-lived supports and hydraulic lifters, sometimes they knock hard already at 100 km. The search for the cause of poor starting should start with a fuel filter or a gasoline pump.

The manufacturer claims the resource of the G4ED engine is 200 km, but it runs up to 000 km.
