Engine 4n14

A deformed version copied from European diesel engines, which has been installed on the L200 pickup truck for the past two years. This is an engine with piezo injectors and a variable geometry turbine.

Critical Description

The 4n14 engine is the diesel preferred by many Russian motorists for the sake of economical durability. However, no prospects are seen on the new power plant, since the engine is too gentle and sensitive to bad fuel. And what is there to be surprised - the entire structure was adjusted to modern Euro-5 standards. The result was a complex, unpredictable engine that is unlikely to last without repair to the 100th kilometer mark.

Today it has become customary to produce engines that only look glossy and economical. In fact, after the warranty period, it is very difficult and expensive to repair or operate them. What kind of reliability are we talking about here?

Again, for the sake of the new fashion, an 8-speed automatic transmission is paired with the engine. Think about it, 8 speeds - why so many? It smacks of disposability, some kind of Chinese consumer goods. According to statistics, centenarians are extremely rare among multi-speed automatic transmissions, and this is not surprising.

It turns out that 4n14 is a rare, complex, expensive and unreliable motor? Yes, cars equipped with it will sharply lose value after each next warranty maintenance. And also our diesel fuel, Russian, which kills the strongest Japanese engines - 4d56, 4m40.

Problems

The 4n14 engine is new, so it has not yet earned many reviews. However, it is already possible to draw some conclusions by studying its design features.

  1. Piezo injectors are considered to be technological innovations that have rapidly burst into the world of engines. They work 4 times faster than standard electromagnetic ones, but they fail just as quickly.

  2. Turbine with variable geometry is covered with soot too quickly, jams during operation.
  3. EGR valve - rarely reaches 50 thousand kilometers of the vehicle. Flushing the valve after 15 thousand km is recommended by the manufacturer.
  4. Maivek - the legendary Mitsubishi system of adjustable phases works excellently only for the time being, for the time being. After that, qualified intervention in the timing is required.
  5. Common Rail is an expensive system with electronically controlled nozzles. In principle, the new century, but on the other hand, the standard injector looks simpler and more reliable.
  6. The timing chain already on the new 4m41 engine made it clear that in recent years it has been made worse and worse. A resource of 70 thousand kilometers for a metal drive, you see, well, it’s not very solid! Also, the engine must be removed when replacing, so why didn’t they put the belt right away.
  7. A particulate filter combined with catalysts is somehow too abstruse, which means that it definitely won’t last long.

Piezo injectors

It is well and accurately said: what is good for an engineer is bad for a locksmith. This is just about piezo injectors, the repair of which is a real horror for car repair workers. Today, piezo injectors are increasingly being used in Common Rail systems on diesel engines. They are being pushed by designers who have adopted high-tech tools for fine-tuning the internal combustion engine. But mechanics and car owners end up with a bouquet of financial and technical problems that are difficult to solve.

Instead of an electric magnet with a moving core, the piezo injector is endowed with a special element in the form of a square column. In other words, this is a set of ceramic plates stacked on top of each other and soldered, in which, under the influence of current, a piezoelectric effect occurs. The design of the piezo injector is universal, it is able to change its length in a short time, thereby acting on the control valve. Compared to a conventional injector, this is an increase in the response speed by 0,4 ms, a greater force on the valve and a higher accuracy of cutting off the fuel supply. In a word, theoretically only one pluses.

Now for the cons. From the point of view of service, the main problem of piezo injectors is the high complexity of their repair. In addition, these are very sensitive elements that react to the slightest deterioration in the quality of diesel fuel. Regularly pouring good fuel with a high degree of purification at gas stations in Russia is simply unrealistic, therefore, after a couple of thousand kilometers, cars with such a system get repaired.

The whole replacement option is also being considered. But here, too, nothing good for the Russians - new piezo injectors are very expensive. The most vulnerable link in the piezo injector system is the control valve, the failure of which threatens to damage the entire injector.

Variable geometry turbine

Variable geometry turbine

The difference between a conventional turbine and a variant with variable geometry is that, compared to the classical one, the section at the wheel inlet is changed here. This is done for the sole purpose of increasing the power of the turbine for a given load.

An engine with such a turbine has a very high pressure. Supercharging is controlled by a drive, a vacuum regulator and a stepper motor.

In principle, the variable geometry turbine is considered one of the best turbocharging systems in the ranking. It is better than twinscroll, turbo and single turbine, almost as good as electric turbine and variable twinscroll. But, again, the quality of diesel fuel comes first - poor fuel quickly spoils this type of turbine.

Diesel particulate filter

The element has been put on diesel engines for a long time. It is designed to clean the atmosphere of excess soot, which is abundant in diesel fuel. Installing a particulate filter on a Mitsubishi 4n14 is like a tribute to environmentalists, because it was they who came up with this method.

Particulate filter principle of operation

In fact, the particulate filter is a substitute for a catalyst or its addition. It is a separate unit that is placed after the catalyst or combined with it - as on 4n14 and Volkswagen engines.

Obviously, from bad fuel, the particulate filter will quickly become clogged, which will create a tangible barrier to gases and reduce engine power.

Conclusion about the 4n14 engine: new, technologically advanced, meets Euro-5 standards. But it is difficult to call it reliable, maintainable and cheap.
