Nissan ca18, ca18de, ca18det, ca18i and ca18s engine
These engines are in-line, four-cylinder, production began back in 1981, they were installed on a variety of cars.
They all have a cast iron block and an aluminum head.
All modifications have the same volume - 1,8l DOHC 16V / OHC 8V gas distribution system is typical for all cars.

Motor reliability
This motor is considered the next step in the development of the previous Z-18 model. The Nissan ca18 ICE can, like its predecessor, run for some time on A-76 type gasoline and its piston group will not be too damaged. With a dual-circuit ignition system, even with a Hall sensor, no one can guarantee the correct operation of the system (this can be observed from the oscillograms). Often the switch circuits that are in the distributor become unusable (by the way, the circuits are interchangeable with other circuits of other engine models).
Over time, starting in 1986, optical systems are installed in the distributor of this engine without using a Hall sensor. The optical system justified itself all hundred, no problems and malfunctions in the functioning were found. If you want to choose an engine that has an optical sensor rather than a Hall sensor, make sure that there is no ignition timing vacuum servomotor on the distributor housing. Instead, there should be an engine control unit.
A common problem with this engine is the carburetor, the main cause of failure is dirt. Keep the engine clean, every lever and spring in the carburetor; periodically changing filters before cleaning (preferably branded ones) - you will forget about problems with the carburetor for a long time.
If you decide to change the valve stem seal, you will have to remove the roller that holds the rocker arm, do not forget that the thread of the M8 bolt breaks off very simply and you need to be extremely careful.
When the belt at the valve breaks, the bolt can bend, the probability of this option is 50%. If you decide to replace the timing belt, you may encounter a problem associated with marks - most often they are put with paint. To set the top dead center on the first cylinder, align the marks on the windshield cover and the 2nd mark, which is to the left of the pulley. Labels can be calculated in the amount of six, most often they are marked with light shades.
If you evaluate the whole ca18 is reliable as an engine, but there are some difficulties in repair work and tuning, for example, to change the oil filter in this engine, you need to spend a lot of effort and time.
There is another unpleasant problem with the sa18 engine - the ignition switch and the Hall sensor are destroyed, the distributor is unstable; cuts the key from the drive to the camshaft, directly into the distributor. Because of this, the ignition process is disrupted. At first glance, everything is in order - a working slider, a spark, but the engine will not start.
Maintainability
CA18DET is an engine that can only be assessed ambiguously.
Benefits of CA18 in renovation:
- Small in weight, excellent weight distribution;
- Easy to tune to CA18DE(T) if you replace the cylinder head and pistons;
- Low cost consumables
- Easy to find replacement parts
It is not difficult to repair this engine, and if you are unsure of your abilities, this is an easy task for specialists. The only problem is the failure of the Throttle Position Sensor.
If the dpdz is broken, then get ready for an expensive repair.
What kind of oil to pour
Since there is a dry sump here, a special approach is needed. If you read the reviews of motorists, then the oil from the original manufacturer is best suited.
Nissan oils are high quality, recommended by the factory for this gasoline engine. Balanced viscosity and protective properties provide the required lubrication of the mechanism, which will reduce its wear and increase the life of the engine. If you use oil, the engine will start much easier in bad weather. Compliance with the manual for use is a prerequisite!
