Nissan Patrol of the fourth and fifth generations, and especially the fourth, bearing the factory index Y60, produced from 1987 to 1997, was a truly legendary car, both in our country and around the world.

An unpretentious strong car with high off-road qualities has become an indispensable assistant for lovers of long-distance travel, both on ordinary roads and, most importantly, on rough terrain.

Among other things, this car also received its reputation for a wide range of power units, distinguished by unpretentiousness and high reliability. But the td42 diesel engine was considered the best for Patrols, and we will talk about it in this article.

Motor history

This power unit is a representative of a very successful family of engines united under the TD index. This family included a wide range of engines with a volume of 2,3 to 4,2 liters, power from 76 to 161 horsepower.

Diesel TD42, this is not one engine, but a whole series of engines that were at the top of the TD family line. The TD42 differed from its younger counterparts in that it was the only power unit with six cylinders (all other engines of the TD family are four-cylinder).Nissan td42 engine

As for the TD42 engines specifically, the series of these power units consisted of 8 pieces, three conventional and five turbocharged:

  • TD42, atmospheric, 115 hp;
  • TD42E, atmospheric, 135 hp;
  • TD42S, naturally aspirated, 125 hp;
  • TD42T1, turbocharged, 145 hp;
  • TD42T2, turbocharged, 155 hp;
  • TD42T3, turbocharged, 160 hp;
  • TD42T4, turbocharged, 161 hp;
  • TD42T5, turbocharged, 130 hp;

They all appeared at different times. The first, in 1987, were the aspirated TD42 and TD42S, along with the next generation of Patorl. And in the next year, 1988, the second power unit of this TD42E family appeared. This motor was created specifically for the Nissan Civilian delivery passenger bus. However, over time, they began to install it on Patrols.

Turbocharged versions of these engines appeared much later. The first, in 1993, for the Japanese version of the Patrol, which bore the name Safari on the islands, developed the 145 hp TD42T1.

The more powerful TD42T2 appeared in 1995 on the previously mentioned Nissan Civilian delivery bus.

The next, in 1997, on the fifth generation of the Nissan Patrol, under the Y61 index, appeared the TD42T3, with a power of 160 hp. In 1999, the turbocharged power unit for the Nissan Civilian was updated. This motor was named TD42T4.

Well, the last one with a long break, in 2012, the TD42T5 appeared. This power unit is produced to this day and is installed on the Nissan Atlas truck, produced and sold exclusively in Malaysia.

It is not enough to call these engines simply successful; they are truly legendary. And this is due to a number of qualities. First of all, these power units, with relatively low power, have, just the same, a gigantic torque at low revs, which is very important when driving on heavy off-road. This quality has long been appreciated by participants, both professional and, to a greater extent, amateur rally raids, where Nissan Patrol cars have long been regular participants.

Motor reliability

Another, no less important, if not more, quality is the exceptional reliability of these motors. Their reliability has long been the real legend. Most cars with these powertrains have passed without major repairs in the region of 1 million kilometers. And with caring care, a million is far from the limit. In fact, these are truly perpetual motion machines.

As mentioned above, td42 motors are very reliable. Up to 300 kilometers, usually nothing happens to them at all. But there are some nuances.

For example, engines manufactured before 1994, in addition to all their advantages, also have a low perception of fuel quality, which is very important for our country. True, in power units, after the 1994 release, this dignity disappears, however, nevertheless, it will digest even bad diesel fuel much better than competitors produced by other companies.

It’s also worth knowing that Patrols with td42 engines were not officially delivered to our country, so many off-road enthusiasts put these power units on their jeeps on purpose. Engines for this operation today are supplied used from the showdowns in Japan or Europe. This operation is quite complicated, but the owners of Japanese SUVs still go for it.

Another important point that affects the reliability of this power unit is the absence of a timing belt. On these power units, the gear drive does not require any maintenance at all.

Features of replacing the engine with TD42

As mentioned above, many Patrol owners go to replace powertrains. Why do it.

As already mentioned above, cars with TD42 were not officially delivered to Russia. In our country, cars with gasoline engines are common, among diesel engines, most often you can find 2,8 liter RD28T engines. This motor has a number of disadvantages compared to the TD42.

On the RD28T, the main weak point is its turbine. Firstly, it runs no more than 300 kilometers. And she walks not at all without problems, this unit is very sensitive to overheating, which often happens during off-road driving.

Another serious problem is, in general, overheating of the motor. As a result, the aluminum cylinder head very often bursts. But the TD42 has a cast-iron head and it easily and without any problems endures even serious overheating.

As mentioned above, ready-made power units are supplied by specialized companies from overseas car yards. These power units are called contract. Contract engines from power units from standard domestic auto-dismantling differ in that it has no mileage in our country. In addition, the seller in the West conducts its full MOT and revision, which is a guarantee that you will receive the power unit in very good condition. In the case of the TD42, this means that the engine will still last forever and can be installed at minimal cost.

It is possible to distinguish a contract power unit from a motor from auto-dismantling by a package of documents provided by sellers. These documents indicate that the engine has been cleared by customs and can be used when registering with the traffic police.

What is the price for such power units. Despite the fact that the price is set individually in each case, there is a certain price range for Nissan TD42 diesel engines. The price of engines with runs from 100 to 300 kilometers today ranges from 000 to 100 rubles.

When replacing RD28T with TD42, the following nuances must be considered. First of all, in addition to the internal combustion engine, you will also have to change the gearbox. With the RD28T, a manual gearbox (MT) of the FA5R30A model is installed. TD42 works with another manual transmission, model FA5R50B. So if you buy an engine, it is better to buy it complete with a gearbox.

In addition, it will also be necessary to change the starter and alternator to a 12-volt one. True, contract power units are usually sold with these nodes.

When replacing power units, the gearbox changes without any alterations, the seats of the FA5R30A and FA5R50B boxes are the same. The only thing you will need to throw the flanges of the cardan shaft. The cardan shaft remains the same as it was.

But the ICE attachment points do not match and they need to be redone a little. The right base is slightly displaced and lengthened.

After installing the engine from the old power unit, a water radiator can be used, the same old wiring is used, without alterations. The oil cooler found on the RD28T is not on the TD42.

Another interesting point is the transfer of the turbine. If you install an atmospheric TD42, then the turbine from the RD28T is transferred to it without problems. At the same time, the engine becomes more powerful, and the Japanese SUV will drive much more cheerfully.

Actually, these are all the nuances that you need to know in order to replace the Nissan RD28T diesel engine with the Nissan TD42. The entire replacement budget, in Russia, should be within a million - 900 rubles.

If you change a gasoline engine, then this operation is much more difficult, and, accordingly, more expensive, but it is also possible to do it.

What oil to pour into a Nissan td42 engine

In principle, TD42 motors are quite unpretentious to oils. The only thing to remember is that you need to use diesel engine oil. When choosing an oil, the main thing to keep in mind is the climatic conditions of the machine. The colder the car is operated in, the higher quality oil should be used. For example, according to the SAE classification, oils do not lose their properties at temperatures:

  • 0W- oil is used in frosts down to -35-30°С;
  • 5W- oil is used in frosts down to -30-25°С;
  • 10W- oil is used in frosts down to -25-20°С;
  • 15W- oil is used in frosts down to -20-15°С;
  • 20W- oil is used in frosts down to -15-10°C.

The second car with a TD42 diesel engine was the Nissan Civilian medium-haul passenger bus. This bus is much less known in our country, but still a certain number of these buses in Russia can be found on the roads.

But, specifically, H41 is produced in Malaysia and for the market of this country. Therefore, you will not find Nissan Atlas H41 in Russia.
