Renault F4RT engine

In the early 2000s, Renault engineers based on the well-known F4P developed a new power unit that surpassed its predecessor in power.

Description

The F4RT engine first made itself known in 2001 in Le Bourget (France) at the automobile air show. Motor production continued until 2016. The assembly of the unit was carried out at the Cleon Plant, the parent company of the Renault concern.

The motor was intended for installation on cars of its own production in top-end and sports equipment.

F4RT is a 2,0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline power unit with a capacity of 170-250 hp. s and torque 250-300 Nm.

Installed on Renault cars:

  • Come on (2001-2003);
  • Or Enough (2002-2009);
  • Space (2002-2013);
  • Lagoon (2003-2013);
  • Mégane (2004-2016);
  • Scenic (2004-2006).

In addition to the listed models, the F4RT car was installed on Megane RS, but already in a forced version (270 hp and a torque of 340-360 Nm).

The cylinder block is cast iron, not lined. Aluminum alloy cylinder head with 16 valves and two camshafts (DOHC). It should be noted that both the camshafts and other parts of the CPG (pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft) are reinforced.

The phase regulator on the internal combustion engine was gone. The timing drive remained, like its predecessor, belt.

The installation of the turbine required the use of higher quality fuel, with a higher octane rating (AI-95 for the base model, AI-98 for the sports model - Megane RS).

Hydraulic compensators eliminate the need to manually adjust the valve clearance.

What do the modifications F4RT 774, 776 mean

During the production process, the engine was repeatedly upgraded. The basis of the motor remained the same, the changes mostly affected attachments. So, for example, the F4RT 774 has a twin turbo.

Motor modifications had significant differences in technical characteristics.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

Car owners call the F4RT engine reliable and durable. This is true. The unit in question occupies an intermediate position in the segment of gasoline turbo engines in its class.

A motorist from the city of Serov, in a review of his Renault Megane, writes: “... The f4rt 874 engine developed by Renault Sport. Very reliable, simple and time-tested”. He is fully supported by a colleague from Omsk: “... The engine really likes its noiselessness and elasticity. The engine of the Renault-Nissan concern, the same is put on the new Nissan Sentra, only the fuel injection system is different and the intake manifold seems to be different too.. Summing up MaFia57 from Orel: “... I have been operating the F4RT engine for 8 years now. Mileage 245000 km. For the entire period of operation, I only changed the turbine, and then that I ruined by my own stupidity. I bought a used one with a mileage of 130 and I still drive without problems”.

It must be borne in mind that the reliability of the engine is maintained only with timely and proper maintenance.

During operation, it is also necessary to follow all the recommendations of the manufacturer. Ignoring them leads to irreversible consequences. For example, the use of AI-92 gasoline, as well as low grade oils, is unacceptable. Violation of this recommendation will significantly reduce the life of the motor and lead to its overhaul.

Weak spots

Disadvantages are inherent in every engine. One of the main weaknesses of the F4RT has traditionally been electrical failures. Ignition coils and some sensors (crankshaft position, lambda probe) fail especially often. Unexpectedly, the ECU can deliver trouble.

The resource of the turbine also leaves much to be desired. Usually, after 140-150 thousand kilometers, the turbocharger has to be changed.

Often the engine is experiencing increased oil consumption. The reason for this may be malfunctions in the turbine, stuck piston rings, valve stem seals. Additionally, various smudges can affect oil consumption (through the crankshaft oil seal, valve cover seals, turbocharger bypass valve).

F4R Engine Problems on Renault Duster

Unstable idle speeds also do not cause delight. Their appearance is associated with the use of low-quality fuel, resulting in an ordinary clogging of the throttle or injectors.

Maintainability

Repair of the unit does not cause big problems. The cast iron block allows you to bore the cylinders to the required size. This indicates the possibility of a complete overhaul of the entire internal combustion engine.

The necessary spare parts can be purchased at any specialized store. The only caveat is that only original parts and assemblies are suitable for use in engine rebuilding. The fact is that analogues do not always correspond to quality, especially Chinese ones. It is not recommended to use used spare parts for repairs, since it is almost impossible to determine their residual service life.

Given the high cost of spare parts and the complexity of the work, it is necessary to evaluate the option of purchasing a contract engine. Its average price is about 70 thousand rubles.

The F4RT engine, created by Renault engine builders, meets all the needs of motorists. The main advantages are reliability and durability. But they appear only if the manufacturer's recommendations for servicing the unit are followed.
