At the turn of the XNUMXth-XNUMXst centuries, VAG engineers developed and put into production a power unit that gained popularity among motorists from the first days.
Description
The engine appeared in August 1999. The release continued until September 2003. It was intended for the first generation Skoda Fabia (6Y) B-class car.
The first acquaintance of the general public with the unit took place at an exhibition in Frankfurt. The engine has become a significant component in obtaining the Skoda Fabia title "Car of the Year", won already in 2000. Austria, Great Britain, Poland, Slovenia and Croatia were the first to award this title. With a slight delay, Bulgaria and Denmark joined them.

The Skoda AME engine is a 1,4-liter gasoline in-line four-cylinder aspirated engine with a capacity of 68 hp. with and a torque of 120 Nm.
The unit was installed on Skoda cars:
- Fabia /6Y2/ (1999-2003);
- Fabia Combi /6Y5/ (2000-2003);
- Fabia Practice (2001-2003);
- Fabia sedan /6Y3/ (2001-2003).
The cylinder block is cast from an aluminum alloy, cast-iron liners are pressed inside.
Aluminum cylinder head. It has eight valves, two per cylinder. The thermal clearance of the valves is automatically adjusted by hydraulic compensators.
A feature of the timing is the lower camshaft position (OHV). Chain drive, simplified design - without tensioner elements. Despite this, it is considered reliable, but short-lived. The chain, as a rule, requires replacement after 60-80 thousand kilometers.
It is necessary to constantly monitor the condition of the drive circuit. In the event of a jump, a serious prerequisite for a major overhaul of the internal combustion engine is created due to the bending of the valves.
Fuel supply system - injector, distributed injection.
The recommended gasoline is AI-95, but it can also work on AI-92. The only requirement for fuel is that it must be of high quality. Deviations lead to accelerated failure of the fuel system elements.
The lubrication system involves the simplest design of a gear-type oil pump. Located in the oil pan (crankcase) of the engine. System capacity 4,0 liters, 5W-30, 5W-40 oil is used.
The cooling system is liquid, closed type, single-circuit. The water pump (pump) is rotated by means of a V-ribbed belt.
The general control of the operation of the internal combustion engine is carried out by the ECM with a built-in engine diagnostics system with the Simos 3PB ECU.

For the Skoda AME engine, the most appropriate term would be not “reliability”, but “endurance”. With proper care, this motor is renowned for its durability and pickyness. Almost all car owners unanimously declare: the motor is successful in every respect.

Some motorists are not satisfied with the low, in their opinion, ICE power. Here it is necessary to proceed from the purpose of the motor. Initially, it was created for class “B” cars, that is, not for sports or heavy SUVs, but for light cars. With a calm, measured operation, the engine has enough power. Forcing the engine does not give a big effect, but it brings a lot of harm.
The only thing that can be done to increase power without harming the unit is to perform chip tuning (Stage 1). This will add 5-7 hp to the motor. s and increase the torque by 6-8 Nm. But such an increase is unlikely to be noticeable. More aggressive chip tuning is not recommended.

Weak spots
The engine has weaknesses, but some of them are not critical, since they are provoked by the car owner himself. But there are also many factory flaws.
The main problem is the accelerated pulling of the timing chain. Almost to a run of 100 thousand km, its resource ends as a result of wear. When using high-quality oil and its timely replacement, competent operation of the engine, the chain can go longer. In the fuel system, injector control is required. Here it must be remembered that their performance depends on the quality of gasoline. Usually they need to be changed by 100 thousand km.

It is clear that without knowledge of the technical process of restoration work, it is impossible to perform high-quality repairs. But in this aspirated there are simply no big technological “troubles”.
