Volvo B4194T engine

This is a 1,9 liter direct injection powertrain. Its compression ratio is 8,5 units. The motor is equipped with a turbine and an intercooler. Its output power reaches 200 hp. With. It is considered one of the best units of the S40 / V40 line.

Engine description

Volvo B4194T engine
Motor for Volvo B 4194 T

Motor control unit of the Swedish company - Siemens EMS 2000. Compressor type TD04L-14T. This four-cylinder power unit has a transverse arrangement, uses a timing belt, valve system - 16 Valve. The exact working volume of the engine is 1855 cubic centimeters. It is installed on cars S40 and V40 of 2000 of release.

In general, the range of Volvo S40 and V40 engines is quite wide. The motors are equipped with a timing belt drive, which is rarely replaced before the 50th run. Gasoline turbocharged units are as durable as the famous aspirated ones. With proper maintenance, they pass 400-500 thousand kilometers without overhaul. It is necessary to update during this period only the elements of the ignition system, the air sensor, the starter and the generator. However, it is advisable to service Volvo engines in specialized workshops, since their design is complex.

Engine problems

To be sure, the B4194T is not as problematic as the 1,8-liter injection engine borrowed from the Japanese manufacturer. This system did not take root on the Swedish engine, and the power plant began to create a lot of problems during operation. First of all, it is bad that it is not possible to supply LPG - for many potential buyers, especially from the EAEU countries, this becomes a serious drawback. The reason is just in the fuel system - it is too capricious. With a 1,9-liter internal combustion engine, everything is fine in this regard.

B4194T rarely bothers owners before 400 miles

No on the B4194T and whimsical automatic valve lifters - hydraulic lifters. They were used only on old gasoline engines, then they were replaced - they put pushers of a fixed size. This means that the gap is not automatically adjusted, manual adjustment is required. So, when using gas, the tuning procedure should be carried out every 25 thousand kilometers.

In general, the motor turned out to be reliable. It is not worth comparing them with the problematic old gasoline or very unsuccessful diesel units of the Volvo S40, originally from Renault. For example, the operation of the latter is carried out according to French standards, which leads to a common malfunction - oil leaks. After the 100th run, a major overhaul is already needed, as oil consumption rises sharply.

Swap

It is noteworthy that the B4194T often becomes the subject of a swap. For example, the motor fits well instead of the N7Q on the Renault Safrane. The engines are completely interchangeable, only you have to modify the exhaust pipe a little to make everything fall into place. You also need to remove the regular air filter, as the nozzles will interfere.

It is important to pay attention to the ECU. The block must be from Volvo and be correctly flashed. Otherwise, the engine will smoke like a diesel. In principle, both blocks are similar in many respects, but it is desirable to put brains from the Swedish motor.

NicholasHello .. I bought a Volvo V40 1.9T4 car. 99y.v. There is a B4194T2 engine (with a clutch) .. But due to the fact that the valve of the previous owner was bent, I realized that the head was replaced from the B4194T, which is without a clutch. At the moment I have ordinary pulleys .. The valve cover is native, on which an unconnected valve (solenoid) flaunts .. there are no wires nearby, there are only twists of wires and a capacitor nearby .. probably some trick to bypass VVT. under this head. We barely managed to connect the diagnostics .. and then only by entering the VIN number manually. I didn’t read the VIN code, didn’t see the turbine at all .. everything hung up .. Diagnostics was carried out by the original Volvo scanner .. We assumed that the ECU was sewn ... So, the car does not drive as it should .. I’m thinking of buying another engine .. What I actually want to ask ... Can I just put T instead of my T2 (reworked) ... It seems to be digging, brains go alone to three engines (but not a fact) - B4194T, B4194T2 and B4204T5. Tell me please .. can I replace a fresher engine with an older one without any modifications and ECU limits without consequences? It just suits me better without vanos .. Thank you!
Pavel Vizman, KurskSo, comrade, let's start with the fact that mechanically T and T2 differ only in the presence / absence of a clutch (it seems that the crankshaft sensor was also installed under a different flywheel on atmospheric engines, but I think you still have the old flywheel) - therefore, there is no point in replacing the engine, the problem is not German If there was T2 from the assembly line, you can find brains under T, since you think that the point is their incorrect adaptation to the lack of a clutch. (in this case, it will be necessary to clarify the moment with the crankshaft sensor). It is necessary to see if the boost control solenoid valve (part No. 9155936) is working, to diagnose whether the turbine blows as much as it should. As for the Chinese scanner, try connecting to it from another phone or software. It's too early to blame the ECU, these scanners are not connected to all mobile phones, but how lucky.
Leocan't you just install a turbo kit for 2,0 Volvo? I spoke to the owner of a turbocharged S40, he said that the swap kit is about 300 USD. costs
VarosAbout the wiring. I found the diagrams on the net, the fact is that the fenix 5 brains were put on the Volvo Magpies on aspirated (they are almost identical to those that are on Renault with a 2.0 engine, I don’t know which ones for 2.5) and ems 2000 on turbo and aspirated after 2000, in the hands of a tester and drove, the only thing that had to be added to the wiring is the flow meter and boost pressure control valve. He left all his wiring just soldered the connector to the block according to the scheme. I didn’t have any problems with immo either, I connected it to my own and left it clean so that the doors closed, the only problem was to find a set of brains + immo + key, I’ve been waiting since autumn, first I ordered in Poland through an intermediary pokupkiallegro.pl they deceived for 2 months the brains powdered what was supposedly on They mixed up something in the mail and the money went away, then my friends brought me a set from Poland. I'll try to run diagnostics over the weekend to see if there are any errors.
BabukOn the Volvo S40, communication between the units is via a digital can-bus. In principle, communication is also organized in Renault, but after 2000, and in almost all modern cars :-)

IlyaAnd who has a thread on B4194T? ato can not find diagrams, and repair manuals
Sasha, RyazanThis is my first car and I will never forget it. Powerful, solid and practical sedan for every day. Bought it in 2004 from the original owner. Traveled until 2010, then moved to the second generation S40. It was a 1996 model, with a 200-horsepower 1,9-liter engine that ate a lot of fuel, but provided excellent dynamics. Fuel consumption was 13-14 liters. In a new car in 2005, which with a 1,6 engine, I fit into 9-10 liters. Of course, the second generation S40 is more comfortable, but does not cause such nostalgia as with its predecessor.
forOkromya as a “book from Rumbula”, basically, there is not a lot of information on T4 on the network. Although the car is quite famous in the services and it may not be necessary to look for a book additionally as an “appendix to the glove box” Alexey has almost all the info on forty in his head “laid” and if you want to repair something yourself, ask him. I think he will always help.
IlyaI have a problem that the car twitches during acceleration, and then after a while it stalls, and does not start for about 30 minutes. then it starts, the engine runs unstable and pops are heard in the engine. the next day it starts up well, I drive for 20-30 minutes and again it starts to twitch and stall. Diagnostics shows nothing.
AlexeyI had a similar problem, I changed 2 coils for candles and candles and the problem disappeared
Ilyaone coil, wires are changed. spark plugs were changed about a year ago. sometimes diagnostics show an error: atmospheric pressure is unacceptable. Thinking of changing another coil and spark plugs?
Smart servicemost likely the problem is in the camshaft sensor (hall sensor) So you have to try.
IlyaIs it the distributor? I changed the crankshaft sensor, aka the speed sensor.
