The production of the next generation of 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines - N57 (N57D30) from Steyr Plant, began in 2008. Compliant with all Euro-5 standards, the N57 has replaced the beloved M57 - repeatedly awarded at international competitions and one of the best in the BMW turbodiesel line.

The N57D30 received a closed aluminum BC, inside which a forged crankshaft with a piston stroke of 90 mm (whose height is 47 mm) was installed, which made it possible to achieve as much as 3 liters of volume.

The cylinder block inherited from its predecessor an aluminum cylinder head, under which two camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder are hidden. The diameter of the valves at the inlet and outlet: 27.2 and 24.6 mm, respectively. Valves have legs 5 mm thick.

A characteristic feature of the timing chain drives in the N57 internal combustion engine, as in the N47, is that the chain is located at the rear of the installation. This was done in order to reduce the risks of pedestrians in case of emergency.

The N57D30 units are equipped with: diesel fuel supply technology - Common Rail 3; High pressure fuel pump CP4.1 from Bosh; supercharger Garrett GTB2260VK 1.65 bar (in some modifications, double or triple models of turbocharging are installed), and, of course, an intercooler.

Also installed in the N57D30 are intake swirl flaps, EGR, and a Bosch electronic unit with DDE firmware version 7.3.

Simultaneously with the 6-cylinder N57, a smaller copy of it was produced - N47 with 4 cylinders. In addition to the absence of a pair of cylinders, these engines were distinguished by turbochargers, as well as intake and exhaust systems.

Since 2015, the N57 has been replaced by the B57.

Modifications

  • N57D30T1 is the first upgraded Top performance engine with 313 hp. and 630 Nm. The release of the first modified N57D30T1, complying with all Euro-6 standards, began in 2011. The updated units received improved combustion chambers, a Garrett GTB2056VZK supercharger, as well as electromagnetic nozzles. The internal combustion engine is controlled by a Bosch unit with DDE firmware version 7.41.
  • The N57D30S1 is a Super Performance Class 381 engine with a Tri-Turboged supercharger that delivers 740 hp. and 16.5 Nm. The installation has a reinforced BC, a new crankshaft, pistons under ss 6 and a modified CO. Valves have also increased, a new intake system has been installed, nozzles with a piezoelectric drive, an improved fuel system, as well as an exhaust that complies with Euro-7.31 standards. The control unit was supplied by Bosch with DDE firmware version 57. The main thing that distinguishes the N30D1S57 from other modifications of the N30D45 is a three-stage turbocharger with two BV2 superchargers from BorgWarner and one B381, which in total allow you to achieve 740 hp. and XNUMX Nm.

Advantages and problems of N57D30

Extraneous noises in the N57D30 indicate a broken crankshaft damper, which usually happens already at 100 thousand kilometers. After another hundred thousand, an unnatural sound in the rear of the unit indicates a possible need to replace the timing chain. Unlike the units of the M family, the dampers in the N57D30 cannot get into the internal combustion engine, but they can become so heavily covered with coke that they stop working altogether, which is why the motor will constantly give errors.

The resource of turbines in BMW N57D30 engines is about 200 thousand km, but usually even more. In order for the power unit to work as long as possible, you should not save on the quality of the oil and it is better to use technical fluids recommended by the manufacturer, as well as service the engine in a timely manner and refuel it with proven fuel. Then the resource of the N57D30 engines themselves can significantly exceed the 300 thousand km declared by the manufacturer.

Tuning N57D30

Conventional N57D30s (N57D30U0 and N57D30O0) with a single turbocharger can achieve up to 300 hp with the help of chip tuning, and with a downpipe their power can reach up to 320 hp. The N57D30T1 units in this case add more than 10-15 hp. By the way, the above ICEs with 204 and 245 hp. the most popular for tuning.

The power of the N57D30TOP with two superchargers with just one flashing of the control unit and with a downpipe is tuned up to 360-380 hp.

Perhaps the most flawless of the entire N57 family is the N57D30S1 diesel unit with a Tri-Turboged injection system, after chip tuning and with a downpipe, it can develop power up to 440 hp. and 840 Nm.
