The Corolla Rumion, referred to in Australia as the Toyota Rukus, is a small station wagon produced as part of the Corolla series at Kanto Auto Works in Japan under the Toyota label. The car is based on the second generation Scion xB, the same car but with a different hood, front bumper, front fenders and headlights.

1NZ-FE

Power units of the NZ line began to be produced in 1999. In terms of their parameters, NZ engines are very similar to more serious installations of the ZZ family - the same non-repairable aluminum alloy block, intake VVTi system, single-row timing chain, and so on. There were no hydraulic lifters on the 1NZ until 2004.

2ZR-FE/FAE

ICE 2ZR were launched in the "series" in 2007. The units of this line acted as a replacement for the 1-liter 1.8ZZ-FE engine criticized by many. Mainly from the 1ZR, the 2ZR featured a crankshaft stroke increased to 88.3 mm.

The 2ZR-FE is the base unit and the first modification of the 2ZR with the Dual-VVTi system. The power unit received several improvements and modifications.

Typical malfunctions of Corolla Rumion engines and their causes

High oil consumption is one of the main problems of NZ engines. Usually, a serious “oil burner” begins with them after a run of 150-200 thousand km. In such cases, decarbonization or replacement of caps with oil scraper rings helps.

Extraneous noises in the 1NZ series units indicate chain stretching, which also occurs after 150-200 thousand km. The problem is solved by installing a new timing chain.

Floating speeds are symptoms of a dirty throttle body or idle valve. Engine whistle is usually caused by a worn alternator belt, and increased vibration indicates the need to replace the fuel filter and / or the front engine mount.

Also, on 1NZ-FE engines, the oil pressure sensor often fails and the crankshaft rear oil seal leaks. BC 1NZ-FE, unfortunately, cannot be repaired.

2ZR-FAE

The 2ZR series installations practically do not differ from the 1ZR units, with the exception of the crankshaft and the BHP, so the typical malfunctions of the 2ZR-FE / FAE engines completely repeat the problems of the 1ZR-FE.

High oil consumption is typical for the first versions of the ZR ICE. If the mileage is decent, then you need to measure the compression. Unnatural noises at medium speeds indicate the need to replace the timing chain tensioner. Problems with floating speed are most often provoked by a dirty damper or its position sensor. In addition, after 50-70 thousand kilometers on the 2ZR-FE, the pump begins to leak and the thermostat often fails, and the VVTi valve also jams.

Toyota Rumion is a typical mix of styles that Japanese automakers love so much. Taking into account the cost in the secondary market, the most popular Rumion modifications can be considered those that come with one and a half liter 1NZ-FE units. Among the more powerful models of this hatchback / station wagon on the "secondary" there is also a wealth of choice, including versions with all-wheel drive.

As for the traction characteristics, we can say that the same one and a half liter engine does not seem to be somehow powerless at all, it quickly gains high speed. However, the Corolla Rumion with the 2ZR-FE / FAE engine, which of course has a lot of torque, behaves much faster.
