Toyota Progress engines

Toyota Progres is a car of a Japanese concern, the release of which began in 1998 and continued until 2007. This vehicle is a large sedan equipped with a 2,5 or 3 liter engine, as well as an automatic transmission.

History

Throughout the release, this model has almost never been modified. The vehicle was created by the Japanese, who did everything to produce a high-quality car that does not require careful maintenance and regular repairs. In other words, Toyota Progres is an unpretentious car.

Under the hood of the car, in-line engines are installed, the volume of which is 2,5 or 3 liters. In fact, the overall design of the car is quite complex, and this fact still puts it above some modern models. During development and production, it was assumed that the car would be used for long-distance trips outside the city.

It is worth noting that the car did an excellent job with this task, and many car owners have confirmed this more than once.

As for the appearance, Progres has been criticized more than once because of the similarity of the model with Mercedes, but the Japanese claim that this is actually not the case. Despite attempts by manufacturers to prove otherwise, the cars failed to enter the primary market.

Engines

To begin with, it is worth noting that almost all Toyota engines are distinguished by their reliability and high quality. Toyota Progress cars used two types of engines. Both motors were part of the 1 JZ series. The first was the 1 JZ-GE engine, followed by the 1 JZ-FSE.

2JZ-FSE

Engine 1 JZ-GE is an inline six-cylinder engine. The long period of time during which the unit was most in demand confirms its high technology, quality and reliability.

Among the key features can be noted the use of a gas distribution system, the mechanism of which is called DOHC. Thanks to this property, the motor had great power, and at the same time did not require careful maintenance for the entire period of operation.

Initially, it was decided to use engines on rear-wheel drive models of Toyota cars. The release of the second generation of engines allowed them to be installed on sedans and SUVs.

Another feature worth noting is the electronic fuel delivery system. Through this modification, it was possible to achieve maximum combustion of the fuel used. This allowed the car to instantly respond to pressing the gas pedal.

Finally, another individual feature of this engine is the presence of two belt-driven camshafts. Thus, vibration during the operation of the unit was practically absent, providing increased comfort when driving.

Below are the main changes that have occurred with the engine since its release:

  1. The first generation 1 JZ GE developed power up to 180 hp. The volume of the unit was 2,5 liters. Already at 4800 rpm, maximum torque was reached. Also, in the first generation, the ignition was distributor, which increased the life of the candles and the operation of the entire system.
  2. Since 1995, the first modernization of the unit took place, thanks to which its capacity was increased.
  3. In 1996, the next generation 1JZ GE engine was released - the second. In this version, coil ignition was added, which significantly improved the operation of the unit as a whole, as well as all the systems that interacted with it. The new engine had a gas distribution system, which made it possible to significantly save fuel.

Almost at the same time, the production of 2 JZ engines began, the difference of which was their volume. The first model went into production in 1993. Engine power increased to 220 hp, and the engine was used on the most popular and sought-after sedans.

The second engine, as already noted, was 1 JZ-FSE. The unit worked on D-4 technology, which meant direct fuel injection, carried out under high pressure. The engine ran on gasoline, and therefore there were no significant differences in the form of an increase in power or torque. However, a significant difference was the fuel economy, which improved traction at low speeds.

It is also worth noting that these engines included vertically directed channels in their design.

Thanks to them, a reverse vortex was formed in the cylinder. He sent the fuel mixture to the spark plugs, which improved the supply of air to the cylinders.

What cars have the engine installed on?

In addition to Toyota Progres, the installation of the 1 JZ-GE engine was carried out on such Toyota models as:

  • Crown;
  • Mark II;
  • Brevis;
  • Crest;
  • Mark II Blit;
  • Tourer V;
  • Verossa.

Thus, this once again confirms that the engine was considered quite reliable.

As for the 1 JZ-FSE engine, it can be found among the following car models:

  • Progress;
  • Brevis;
  • Crown;
  • Verossa;
  • Mark II, Mark II Blit.

Which engine is the best?

If we consider all existing Toyota engines, then the JZ series units are still considered one of the best. In turn, the ICE 1 JZ-FSE will be better than its predecessor - 1 JZ-GE, since its release was carried out a little later. Manufacturers have improved the new unit, increasing its performance and efficiency in terms of fuel consumption.

Thanks to the engines used, the Toyota Progres has become an excellent vehicle capable of traveling long distances. A large sedan is a great option for those who prefer to travel in comfort and who, unfortunately, cannot provide thorough care for their car and in particular the engine.
