Volvo Drive E engines

The Volvo Drive E series of gasoline and diesel engines has been produced only since 2013 and only in turbocharged versions.

The Volvo Drive E range of petrol and diesel engines has been produced by the company since 2013 at a specially converted plant of the concern in the Swedish city of Skövde. The series consists of 1.5-liter engines with 3 or 4 cylinders and 2.0-liter 4-cylinder internal combustion engines.

Volvo Drive E 2.0 liter petrol engines

A new line of 2.0-liter 4-cylinder powertrains was introduced in 2013. Engineers tried to assemble almost all relevant technologies in this series of engines: a cylinder block and a head made of aluminum alloys, DLC coating of internal surfaces, direct fuel injection, an electric pump, snatchers, a variable displacement oil pump, a phase control system on both camshafts and, of course, an advanced turbocharging system. According to the established tradition of modern engine building, a timing belt drive is used.

At the moment, three different versions of such power units are offered: with a single turbine, a turbine plus a compressor, as well as a hybrid version with an electric motor. There is a division according to environmental standards: so conventional motors are referred to as VEA GEN1, engines with a particulate filter VEA GEN2 and hybrids with a 48-volt network VEA GEN3.

All engines of the series have the same volume and we divided them into seven groups according to the auto index:

Diesel engines Volvo Drive E 2.0 liters

Most of the parts of diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines of this line are very similar or the same, of course, heavy fuel engines have a reinforced block and their own i-Art injection system. The timing drive here is the same belt, however, phase control systems had to be abandoned.

Several modifications of such power units are offered: with one turbocharger, two standard turbines and two turbines, one of which is with variable geometry. Powerful versions are equipped with a compressed air injection system from a separate PowerPulse tank. They also produce the so-called Mild hybrid models with a BISG kinetic energy storage device.

All motors in the line of the same volume and we divided them into six groups according to the auto index:

1.5 liter Volvo Drive E engines

At the end of 2014, the 3-cylinder power units of the Drive E series were introduced for the first time. Thanks to their modular design, they can be assembled on the same conveyor with an internal combustion engine for 4 cylinders. These engines do not have any special differences, and all versions are equipped with one turbocharger.

About a year later, another modification of 1.5-liter power units appeared. This time there were four cylinders, but with a piston stroke reduced from 93.2 to 70.9 mm.

We divided all three and four-cylinder 1.5-liter engines into groups according to auto indices:
