Many people find the combination of station wagon and sports car to be the perfect combination. This model can be considered Volvo V50. The car is distinguished by high comfort, spaciousness, good throttle response on the road. In many ways, this was achieved thanks to reliable engines.
Review
The release of the model began in 2004, the car replaced the V40, which was already outdated at that time. It was produced until 2012, after which the second generation V40 returned to the conveyor. During the release has undergone one restyling.
The car was based on the Volvo P1 platform, which completely repeats the Ford C1. Initially, the Volvo V50 was designed as a sports car, which resulted in smaller dimensions compared to other wagons from this manufacturer. True, after restyling, the volume of the trunk was slightly increased, responding to the request of consumers.
The front suspension is represented by MacPherson strut independent suspension system. It allows you to effectively withstand all the loads that fall on the front axle. The rear suspension is multi-link, which is also good for increasing comfort when traveling.
Car safety level. The brake system is retrofitted with ABS and ESP. Special developments allow more efficient distribution of braking force between the wheels. The body was made stronger, elements were added that absorb energy upon impact, this minimizes damage to the passenger compartment during collisions.

Description of engines
The model does not have a large number of power plant options. This is one of the differences from other Volvo model solutions. But, since they relied on quality here, all the engines offered are distinguished by a high degree of reliability. Another feature is the lack of diesel engines. They do not apply, the company representatives did not officially say why such a decision was made. According to experts, this is due to the popularity of station wagons in Eastern Europe, where the quality of diesel fuel leaves much to be desired.
During the entire production period, manufacturers installed only two engines on the Volvo V50. Their technical characteristics can be found in the table.

A feature of the engines is the presence of a preheater on all modifications. This simplifies the operation of the car in winter.
The transmission is richer in options. Two manuals were offered, one with five speeds, the other with six speeds. Also, the top versions were equipped with 6RKPP, a robotic gearbox allows you to fully enjoy the movement in any conditions.
Basic configurations implied only front-wheel drive. But, there were cars with all-wheel drive. Moreover, the transmission in this case was equipped with an AWD system, which effectively distributed forces between the wheels on the road.
Typical malfunctions
The motors are quite reliable, but they also have problem nodes. Although with proper care, difficulties do not occur. We list the most common breakdowns of Volvo V50 engines.
- Throttle valve. Somewhere after 30-35 thousand kilometers it jams tightly. The reason is the dirt accumulating under the axle. If the malfunction has already manifested itself, it is worth replacing the throttle.
- Engine mounts fail at a range of 100-120 thousand kilometers. This process is quite natural, associated with the characteristics of the material from which the supports are made. If you notice a pronounced vibration of the motor, it is worth changing all the supports, upon inspection, small cracks on the parts will be visible.
- Problems can be delivered by the fuel filter installed in the tank. It starts to rust. If not replaced, the pump may fail or the nozzles may become clogged. It is recommended to change the filter every two years, without waiting until it completely fails.
- Possible oil leakage through the front crankshaft oil seal. Often masters advise changing the oil seal at the same time as servicing the timing.
Tuning
Not all drivers are satisfied with the motor in the car. In this case tuning. There are several ways to improve engine performance:
- chip tuning;
- refinement of the internal combustion engine;
- SWAP.
The most popular is chip tuning. The work consists in reprogramming the engine control unit in order to increase power or improve other parameters. For tuning, programs suitable for a particular motor are used. Usually you can increase the performance by 10-30%. This is achieved due to the margin of safety, which is laid down by manufacturers.
Attention! Improving the parameters with the help of chip tuning can lead to a reduction in the life of the motor.
In addition, you can completely redo the power unit. The engines installed on the Volvo V50 perfectly tolerate cylinder bores. You can install a more powerful camshaft, reinforced crankshaft and other elements. This allows you to significantly increase engine power. The only disadvantage of such tuning is the high cost.
SWAPO (replacement) of the engine on this model is rarely done. But, if such a need arises, you can use motors with Ford Focus II. They use the same platform in the database, so there will be no installation problems.
Most popular engines
Initially, more cars were sold with the B4164S3 engine. Such modifications were cheaper, which led to such a bias. But, later the number of cars with different engines leveled off.
At the moment, it is almost impossible to say unequivocally which of the engines is more popular. For people who value economy, the B4164S3 will be more popular. Drivers who constantly drive long distances prefer the more powerful B4204S3.
Which engine is better
In terms of quality, both motors are about the same. Their resource is approximately the same, if you normally take care of the car, there will be no difficulties.
It is worth choosing according to power and fuel consumption. If you need a car with a powerful enough engine, or an all-wheel drive version, it is best to choose a car with a B4204S3 engine. When economy is a priority, and you only drive around the city, it will be enough to take a modification from the B4164S3.
