Car wipers and the mechanism that controls them are a simple but important part of any car. If for some reason the device malfunctions or it stops functioning altogether, then visibility deteriorates, which can be the cause of an accident.

Principle of operation

Components
The windshield wiper consists of the following main elements:
- lever mechanism (trapezoid);
- electric motor;
- relay;
- brushes.
Trapeze
One of the important elements in the windshield wiper mechanism is a trapezoid. On almost all cars, this part is the same, and the difference lies only in the methods of fastening, the size and shape of the elements. The functioning of the trapezoid is to transfer rotational motion from the electric motor to the wipers, as well as to ensure the synchronous movement of the latter for high-quality glass cleaning. The trapezoid consists of rods, body and hinge.
Motor
The wiper motor of the VAZ "seven" is made as a single unit with a gearbox and is one of the main links of the mechanism in question. The motor consists of a stator with permanent magnets and an armature with an elongated shaft, at the end of which a screw is cut. The purpose of this node is to ensure the movement of the brushes on the windshield. The device is considered reliable and fails very rarely.
Wiper Relay
On the classic Zhiguli, the windshield wiper has two operating modes - fast and intermittent with an interval of 4-6 seconds. It is to ensure intermittent operation that the RS 514 relay-breaker is intended. Delayed wiper switching is used during light rain, when too frequent operation of the wipers is not required, and when the mechanism is completely turned off, the glass is gradually covered with small drops of precipitation and needs to be cleaned. The product is connected to the general wiring using a four-pin connector. On the VAZ 2107, the breaker relay is located on the driver's side on the left sidewall under the plastic sheathing.
Brushes
Almost all passenger cars use two windshield wiper blades. On the "seven" from the factory, elements 33 cm long are installed. Longer brushes can also be installed, but a large load will be placed on the electric motor, which will lead not only to a slower operation of the mechanism, but also to a possible failure of the motor.
Malfunctions of the VAZ 2107 wipers and their elimination
With windshield wipers, various malfunctions can occur, which manifest themselves in different ways.
The motor is out of order
Often the wipers may not function due to problems with the electric motor. Malfunctions often occur due to the accumulation of friction products in the lubricant in the bushings, which leads to its thickening. As a result, the armature of the motor rotates with difficulty, which leads to burnout of the winding or burnout of the rotor lamellae. Another problem is the wear of the motor brushes. In this case, when voltage is applied, the wipers do not work and sometimes they work when you hit the motor with your hand.
Which one can be put
Instead of a regular "seven" motor, some car owners install a device from the VAZ 2110. Such a replacement is justified by the following positive qualities:
- greater reliability and power;

- 3 speeds (requires a steering column switch from the Chevrolet Niva).
Such an electric motor is installed without any modifications for fastening to a regular place. However, despite the above advantages, some owners of the "classics" note that due to the higher power of the electric motor, the trapezoid fails much faster. Therefore, before making changes to the design of the wiper, it is worth performing the prevention of the old mechanism (clean the trapezium from dirt and lubricate the rubbing elements and the engine itself with the gearbox).
The stock device also does its job quite well if it works properly.
Removing the motor
The wiper motor is located behind the bulkhead of the engine compartment on the left side. To dismantle the mechanism, you need to prepare the following list of tools:
- open-end or spanner key 22;
- end head 10;
- small extension cord;
- crank or ratchet handle.
We remove the part in the following order:
- We tighten the terminal from the minus of the battery.
- Using a 10 wrench, unscrew the nuts holding the wiper arms.We unscrew the fastening of the wiper arms with a key or a head for 10
- We bend the levers and dismantle them from the axles of the trapezoid.We bend the levers and remove them from the axes of the trapezoid
- We unscrew the fastenings of the trapezoid with a key of 22.The trapezoid is held by nuts by 22, unscrew them
- Remove plastic bushings and seals.The connection between the body is sealed with the corresponding elements, which are also removed

- After repairing or replacing the electric motor, we assemble in the reverse order, lubricating the hinges with grease, for example, Litol-24.
Motor repair
To carry out troubleshooting of the elements of the electric motor, it must be disassembled.
Of the tools you need only a set of screwdrivers. We disassemble the node in the following order:
- Loosen the screws securing the plastic cover.Unscrew the plastic cover of the motor
- Unscrew the screw that holds the wire clamp.Loosen the screw holding the wire clamp
- Remove the panel and seal.Dismantle the panel together with the seal

- We clean the motor inside from dust with compressed air.
- We check the condition of the brushes themselves, the armature and its windings. The brushes must move freely in the brush holders, the springs must not be damaged and remain elastic.
- We clean the contacts at the anchor with fine sandpaper and wipe it with a clean rag soaked in a solvent. If the armature is heavily worn or the winding is burnt, the part should be replaced.We clean the contacts on the anchor from dirt with sandpaper
- The assembly is carried out in the reverse order.
Trapeze problems
The fact that there were problems with the wiper trapezoid is evidenced by interruptions in the work of the wipers. They can manifest themselves in the form of an arbitrary stop during operation or too slow movement of the brushes. In addition, a sign of a trapezoid malfunction is jumps or extraneous sounds during operation. The problem is due to the appearance of oxide in the bushings of the trapezium, as well as corrosion on the axles. If we neglect such malfunctions, then over time the electric motor will fail due to high loads.
Mechanism repair
To remove the trapezoid, we perform the same sequence of actions as when dismantling the wiper motor. Of the tools you need only a flat screwdriver. We disassemble the mechanism in the following order:
- We remove the stoppers from both shafts, prying them with a screwdriver.We remove the stoppers from the axles, prying them with a screwdriver
- Remove washers for adjustment.Remove shims from shafts
- We take out the axles of the trapezoid from the bracket and remove the shims located below.After dismantling the axles, remove the lower shims
- We remove the seals from the recesses in the brackets.The axle is sealed with a rubber ring, take it out
- We look at traction. In case of damage to the threads, splines or with a large output of axles, as well as holes in the brackets, we replace the trapezoid assembly.After disassembly, we check the condition of the thread, splines, and with a large output, we change the trapezoid assembly
- If the elements of the trapezoid are in good condition and can still serve, when assembling the mechanism of the axis of the rods, we lubricate with grease.Before assembly, lubricate the axles with Litol-24 grease
- Installation is carried out in the reverse order.

Correct setting of the trapezoid
After carrying out repair work with the trapezoid, you need to set the correct position of the mechanism. To do this, perform the following steps:
- We set the motor to its initial position, for which we connect the block with wires, turn on the wiper mode with the steering column switch, turn it off and wait for the electric motor to stop.Before mounting the motor in place, it is necessary to supply power to it to set the initial position
- We place the crank and short rod parallel to each other, after which we fix the motor to the trapezoid.The crank must be positioned parallel to the short link before being fixed on the motor axis.

Wiper relay not working
When there is no intermittent operation during the operation of the wiper, the main reason is the breakdown of the breaker relay. The way out is to replace the device.
Replacing the relay
To remove the relay, you will need a Phillips and flat screwdriver. We work in the following order:
- Using a screwdriver, pry off the sidewall holders and remove it.Pry off the plastic trim with a screwdriver and remove it
- We disconnect the block with the wiring harnesses coming from the relay.We disconnect the block with wiring harnesses from the relay (the instrument panel has been dismantled for clarity)

Wiper switch malfunction
The stalk switch of the "seven" is responsible for enabling the following functions:
- turns;
- head lighting;
- wipers and windshield washer.
The switch is highly reliable and rarely fails. However, sometimes it still has to be changed, and this happens due to burning of contacts or wear of individual elements of the mechanism. To work, you will need the following list of tools:
- head 24;
- head or key for 8;
- vorotok or rattle;
- flat screwdriver.
Switch Replacement
To replace the switch, perform the following sequence of actions:
- We pry off the steering wheel trim with a screwdriver and remove it.We remove the decorative trim from the steering wheel, prying it with a screwdriver
- Turn off the steering wheel nut with a 24 head, but not completely.The steering wheel on the shaft is held by a 24 nut, we unscrew it with the help of a knob and a head, but not completely
- We knock down the steering wheel, striking with our palms on ourselves.By hitting the palms on ourselves, we knock the steering wheel off the shaft

Fuse blown
A common cause of non-working wipers is a blown fuse. On the VAZ 2107, a fusible insert is responsible for the operation of the wipers F2 for 10 A, located in the fuse box.

Checking and replacing the fuse
If the wipers have stopped functioning, then first of all it is worth checking the integrity of the protective element. To do this, you can use a multimeter by turning it on the dialing mode. If the part is working, then the resistance will be zero. Otherwise, the element needs to be replaced.
Why is the fuse blowing
Sometimes it happens that the fusible insert burns out for no apparent reason. In this case, you need to check the entire electrical circuit from the power source to the motor. The failure of the fuse indicates a short circuit, i.e., too high current consumption in excess of the rating of the protective element. The problem can also be caused by a short circuit in the wiring to the body, jamming of the trapezium due to lack of lubrication in the rods, which indicates the need for inspection and preventive maintenance of the mechanical part of the assembly.

Windshield washer does not work
The windshield washer is used to remove dirt from the windshield. The device sprays water or a special liquid. The main elements of this mechanism are:
- fluid reservoir;
- motor;
- nozzles;
- connecting tubes.
During the operation of a car with a washer, various problems may occur that lead to the lack of its performance:
- failure of the motor;
- blown fuse;
- tube bending;
- breakage of the steering column switch;
- poor contact in the power circuit.
Checking the motor
The failure of the washer pump is easy to check. To do this, just open the hood and pull the lever on the steering column switch, which is responsible for the function of supplying fluid to the windshield. At this point, the operation of the motor will be clearly audible. If this does not happen, then a malfunction can be caused both in the pump itself and in a fuse or other part of the electrical circuit. To make sure that the problem lies precisely in the motor, we measure the voltage with the probes of the multimeter when the washer is turned on. If there is voltage, but the pump does not work, then you need to take care of replacing it.

Nozzles
If the motor is running, and the liquid is not supplied through the nozzles, then it will not be difficult to identify the problem, since there are only a few reasons for this phenomenon:
- blockage of nozzle fittings;
- the feed tube has come off;
- bending the tube.
You can determine the malfunction by inspecting the tubes from the motor to the injectors. If there are no sections with kinks and the tube has not fallen off, then the reason lies in the clogging of the nozzles, which can be cleaned with a sewing needle and blown through with a compressor.
Fuse and mounting block
The integrity of the fuse is checked in the same way as for windshield wipers. The same protective element is responsible for the operation of the washer as for the wipers. In addition to the fuse, the track in the mounting block sometimes burns out, through which power is supplied to the washer. In this case, you need to disassemble the fuse box and restore the conductive element by soldering, after cleaning the track from varnish.
Understeering's shifter
It is worth starting to check the steering column switch on the VAZ 2107 if the fuse, motor and the entire electrical circuit through which voltage is supplied to the pump is in good condition. The wiring in this case should not have breaks, melted insulation and other visible damage. To check the steering column switch, only a multimeter will be enough. Having disconnected the connectors from the device in question, we connect the probes of the device in the continuity mode with a two-pin block. If the switch is working, then in the washer mode, the device will show zero resistance. Otherwise, the mechanism will have to be replaced.

Wipers for headlights
Some owners of the "sevens" for the convenience of using the head light install wipers on the headlights. With the help of these elements, there is no need to constantly clean the optics from dirt manually, which is especially important in rainy weather. To implement the mechanism, the following list will be required:
- headlamp cleaner motors 2 pcs. (left and right);
- two transition bars;
- brush leads;
- brushes;
- washer reservoir with two pumps;
- five-pin relay;
- wiring with pads;
- solenoid valve from the "eight";
- tee and washer tube about 2 m.
As for the brushes themselves, they can be installed both from VAZ 2107 and from VAZ 2105.
Installation
The sequence of steps for installing headlight cleaners is as follows:
- We unscrew the fasteners and remove the grille.We dismantle the radiator grill by unscrewing the corresponding fasteners
- We insert the motors into their native grooves.We install motors in native grooves
- We fix the electric motors from the outside with a 14 nut. So that the shaft does not turn sour, remove the rubber cap, fill Litol-24 grease under it and put it in place.The motors are fastened with nuts for 14
- We mount leashes with brushes on the shaft.Leads are attached to the shaft of electric motors
- We stretch the washer tubes under the hood and put the radiator grille in place.We stretch the tubes from the brushes under the hood
- Instead of a regular washer reservoir, we put a reservoir with two motors. A tube is connected to one that goes to the windshield, a tube from the headlights is connected to the other through a tee and a valve. Plus, the valve is supplied from the power supply of the pump.We replace the standard tank with a new one with two pumps
- We connect the wires according to the diagram.We connect the headlight washer in accordance with the diagram
- We install the relay in its regular place in the mounting block.The relay of cleaners and headlight washers is installed in the mounting block in the appropriate slot
Since, according to the instructions described above, the headlight washer works simultaneously with the windshield washer, in the spring and autumn periods, the liquid from the tank is consumed quite quickly during the daytime, which does not suit many car owners. For a more rational use of the liquid, a separate button should be installed on the headlight washer.
To do this, we perform the following actions:
- We extract the wires from Ш3 | 2 in the cabin and put in an empty block Ш2 | 8 according to the diagram.For separate control of the washer and headlight cleaner, some changes to the electrical circuit must be made.
- We take out the wires from Ш7 | 8 in the cabin and put in an empty block Ш8 | 7.
