A bit of history

The first car produced in Korea was Sibal, it was a copy of the Willys SUV (USA). Since 1964, a little over 3000 machines have been produced, which were assembled in a small workshop using manual labor.

The Korean government has formed several car-producing concerns ("chaebols"). They were given considerable state support in exchange for fulfilling the government's task: to produce competitive cars for export. These groups are Kia, Hyundai Motors, Asia Motors and ShinJu. Now the emblems of Korean cars are recognizable all over the world.

In 1975, the government introduced "draconian" tariff rates on the import of machinery and spare parts from abroad. By 1980, 90% of all components for the local auto industry were produced at home.

The development of road infrastructure within the country and the growing well-being of citizens in 1980 led to an increase in demand in the domestic market and, accordingly, production.

Since 1985, the Excel model from Hyundai Motor has been launched on the American market. This budget car of reliable quality quickly gained popularity among Americans and Europeans. Subsequent models were also successful.

To save business, Korean concerns began to transfer production to other countries where there was cheap labor and energy, including Russia.

In 1998, Hyundai Motors acquired Kia. The united auto giant in 2000 produced 66% of all cars produced in South Korea. The badges of Korean cars have changed several times during the evolution of the car.

Why are Koreans popular?

Distinctive features of Korean-made models are:

  • average price range;
  • a decent level of comfort (increasing all the time);
  • guaranteed quality standard;
  • attractive design;
  • a wide range of passenger cars, light trucks, micro and small buses.
All these criteria add to the attractiveness of South Korean brands in the eyes of consumers around the world. For the buyer, the emblems of Korean cars are an indicator of quality at a reasonable price.

Hyundai Motor Company

Founded in 1967 by a native of a poor peasant family, who has come a long way from a loader to the founder of a car concern. Translated into Russian, the name means "modernity". The letter "H" in the center represents two people shaking hands. Now the concern is engaged in the production of cars, elevators, electronics.

KIA Motors

The brand has existed since 1944. At first, the company produced bicycles and motorcycles and was called KyungSung Precision Industry. In 1951, it was renamed KIA.

After a long collaboration with the Japanese concern Mazda in the 1970s. cars came into production. And already in 1988, the millionth copy rolled off the assembly line. The logo has changed several times. The final version of the badge in the form of the letters KIA, enclosed in an oval, appeared in 1994. The name literally means: “appeared from Asia”.

Daewoo

The literal translation of the name is “big universe”, the concern was founded in 1967. It did not last long, in 1999 the South Korean government liquidated this brand, the remnants of production were absorbed by General Motors. In Uzbekistan, cars of this brand are still produced at the UzDaewoo plant, which was not included in the new company. The emblem in the form of a shell or a lotus flower was invented by the founder of the company, Kim Woo Chong.

A new brand on the market since 2015. The name means “rebirth” in translation. The first of the Korean brands, producing mainly luxury cars.

The highlight of sales is the opportunity to make a purchase on the dealer's website with the subsequent delivery of the selected vehicle to the customer's home. This brand is a sub-brand of Hyundai. The symbol contains the image of wings, which, according to experts, refers us to the phoenix (from the translation "rebirth"). Recently, a photo of the new Genesis GV80 crossover was presented.

SsangYong

SsangYong was established in 1954 (then called Ha Dong-hwan Motor Company). Initially, it produced jeeps for military needs, special equipment, buses and trucks. Then she specialized in SUVs. The final name in translation means "two dragons".

The logo contains two wings as a symbol of freedom and independence. This brand had financial difficulties, but thanks to the financial support of the Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra, which in 2010 acquired a 70% stake in the automaker, bankruptcy and closure of the company were avoided.

A little about little-known brands

Further, the emblems of Korean cars that have not received much fame are considered. The products of the Asia brand stand out from the total mass, which produced world-famous heavy duty vehicles of medium tonnage, vans and buses. The company was founded in 1965. Trucks were popular, the logo of this company guaranteed the purchase of reliable and durable equipment. In 1998, the brand was overtaken by a crisis, and in 1999 it ceased to exist. But trucks, slightly modernized, are still produced for the South Korean army and for export, already under the KIA brand.

Emblem Renault-Samsung

Under the Alpheon brand, the Buick LaCrosse is produced, an elite mid-size car. The wings on the logo mean freedom and speed. Car production is open at the GM Daewoo plant, but the brand is completely autonomous.

Renault Samsung is an automaker that appeared in South Korea in 1994. It is now the property of the French Renault. Models of this brand are presented mainly in the domestic market. Korean models are present abroad under the Renault and Nissan brands. The line includes electric vehicles and military equipment. The logo of the brand is made in the form of a "storm eye" and speaks of the guaranteed quality of the manufactured products.
