Energica: Charging to 80 percent in 30 minutes is a good start, just 15 minutes to 85 percent, then 7 minutes.

Energica, the Italian electric motorcycle manufacturer, announces that charging will soon require as much as refueling. Today, the standard is between 30 minutes and 80 percent, but there are already cells that can withstand a charge up to 85 percent in 15 minutes. And progress will not stop there.

Energika President: 15 minutes to charge is like refueling

A half-hour stop at the charger can be bearable when we are driving because it always takes extra time to sync up multiple people, but it can be annoying when we travel alone. “Fast charging” a motorcycle can be painfully slow if we know there is still a long way to go. However, Giampiero Testoni, Energica's chief engineer, considers 30 minutes a break. Because when we refuel and decide to have coffee, our stop lasts about 20 minutes, which is not much shorter.

A motorcyclist who decides to refuel and stretch his legs spends 15 minutes in the parking lot, and refueling - 5 minutes. AND today there is technology that allows you to charge cells up to 85 percent in 15 minutes... But that's not all: work is underway to develop cells that can be charged up to 80-85 percent in 7-10 minutes. Testoni is probably referring to solid electrolyte cells in which a hard layer separating the electrodes prevents the growth of lithium dendrites.

Likewise, electric motorcycles are starting to tread on the heels of combustion models, the company's CTO said. Energica recently introduced batteries with a capacity of 21,5 kWhwhich allow you to drive 230 kilometers in mixed mode and up to 180 kilometers when driving on the highway.

In Poland, Energica motorcycles are distributed by Motors. The cheapest 2019 models cost over PLN 100, but there is one demo bike with 3 km range that can be purchased for PLN 197 (Otomoto HERE).
