The use of xenon lamps today is considered to be one of the most advanced options for outdoor lighting for both imported and domestic cars, including the VAZ 2106. The bulb of a xenon lamp is filled with gas, which creates a glow after high voltage is applied to the electrodes. Ignition and regular operation of the xenon lamp are provided by special electronic units that generate the voltage of the required value. Bi-xenon technology differs from xenon in that it provides low beam and high beam in one lamp. Among the advantages of xenon over other types of automotive lighting, the durability of such lamps, their economy and efficiency are most often mentioned. The disadvantage of xenon is its high cost.

When installing bi-xenon on a VAZ 2106, you can replace both all four headlights and two of them, for example, external ones (that is, low beam). To feel the difference between standard and newly installed optics, two bi-xenon lamps are usually enough: the level of illumination becomes such that there is no need to buy another rather expensive set.

LED lamp

Another alternative to standard VAZ 2106 optics can be LED lamps. Compared to standard lamps, the "six" LED lamps are more vibration-resistant and often have a waterproof housing, which allows them to be used quite successfully in poor road conditions. LED lamps are much cheaper than bi-xenon ones, and they can work out the entire life of the car. The disadvantage of this type of lamp is high power consumption.

One of the most popular types of light-emitting diode (LED) lamps for the VAZ 2106 is Sho-Me G1.2 H4 30W. The durability and high functionality of such a lamp is achieved through the use of three LEDs fixedly mounted in the body of the device. In terms of brightness, the lamp is not inferior to xenon, the use of Sho-Me G1.2 H4 30W is environmentally friendly, the generated beam of light does not dazzle oncoming drivers, because it is directed at an angle.

Glasses

Instead of factory glasses, you can use, for example, acrylic or polycarbonate.

Acrylic glass

Some owners of VAZ 2106 cars prefer to install acrylic headlights instead of regular glass. Such headlights are often made in private workshops using heat shrink. To do this, as a rule, a gypsum matrix is ​​removed from the old glass and a new headlight made of acrylic (which is nothing more than plexiglass) is cast on it using home-made fixtures. The thickness of the acrylic headlight is usually 3-4mm. For a motorist, such a headlight will cost much less than a standard one, but during operation it can become cloudy and cracked quite quickly.

Polycarbonate

If the owner of the "six" has chosen polycarbonate as the material for the glass of the headlights, he must take into account that:

  • this material is more expensive than, for example, acrylic;
  • the main advantages of polycarbonate compared to acrylic are its higher impact resistance and increased light transmission;
  • polycarbonate has high heat resistance and resistance to atmospheric precipitation;
  • polycarbonate headlights can only be serviced with a soft sponge; abrasive materials cannot be used to care for them;
  • polycarbonate is about 2 times lighter than glass.

Faults and headlights repair

During operation, the owner of the VAZ 2106 does not always notice that the headlights are gradually becoming paler, forcing the driver to look closely at the road. The reason is the inevitable clouding of the lamp bulb after a certain time, so experts recommend making it a habit to regularly replace the front lighting bulbs. If individual lamps or lights do not light up in the car, this may be due to:

  • failure of one of the fuses;
  • lamp burnout;
  • mechanical damage to the wiring, oxidation of the tips or loosening of the electrical wires.

If the main or dipped beam does not switch, then, most likely, the high or low beam relay has failed or the contacts of the steering column switch have oxidized. In both cases, as a rule, replacement is required - respectively, the relay or switch. It is also necessary to replace the three-lever switch if its levers do not lock or switch.

How to disassemble a headlight

To disassemble the headlight VAZ 2106 (for example, to replace the glass), it is necessary to heat the sealant around its perimeter with a hairdryer, and then remove the glass with a thin screwdriver or knife. A hair dryer is a handy tool in this case, but optional: some people heat the headlight in a steam bath or oven, although there is a risk of overheating the glass. Headlights corrector

A device such as a headlight corrector is not used every day, but it can be useful, for example, when driving at night with an overloaded trunk. At the same time, the front of the car “lifts up”, and the low beam is more like a distant one. In this case, the driver can use the corrector to lower the beam of light down. In the opposite situation, when the corrector is configured for a loaded trunk, and the car is empty, you can perform the reverse manipulation.

If the car is not equipped with a corrector, this device can be installed independently. According to the type of drive, the correctors are divided into hydraulic and electromechanical.. Hydraulic consists of a master cylinder and headlight drive cylinders, as well as a tube system and a manual regulator, which is installed on the instrument panel. Electromechanical - from a servo drive, wires and a regulator. The headlights are adjusted with a hydraulic corrector by changing the pressure of the working fluid (which must be non-freezing) in the cylinders. The electric corrector changes the position of the headlights using a servo drive, which consists of an electric motor and a worm gear: after applying voltage to the electric motor, the rotational movement is converted into translational, and the rod connected to the headlight with a ball joint changes its angle of inclination.

Optics cleaning

Periodic cleaning is required not only on the outside, but also on the inside of the VAZ 2106 headlights. If you need to get rid of dirt and dust accumulated during operation, you can use one of the many special cleaners. It is important at the same time that the product does not contain alcohol, which can damage the coating of the reflector and the optics will have to be changed. In some cases, toothpaste or cosmetic micellar nail polish remover may be sufficient to clean the surface of the headlight. To wash the inner surface of the headlight without removing the glass, you need to remove the lamp from the headlight, pour water diluted with a cleaning agent into it and shake it well several times, then rinse the container with clean water and dry it.

If repair or replacement of the tube is required, then, as a rule, it is necessary to disassemble the steering column, and the most typical malfunctions of the steering column switch are the failure of its contacts (as a result of which, for example, high or low beam does not work) or mechanical damage to the tube itself.

Headlight relay

In the VAZ 2106 car, headlight relays of the RS-527 type were originally used, which were later replaced by relays 113.3747–10. Both relays are located in the power unit compartment on the mudguard on the right in the direction of the vehicle. According to their technical characteristics, the dipped and main beam relays are identical:

In the normal state, the headlight relay contacts are open: the closure occurs when the dipped or main beam is turned on with the steering column switch. Repair of relays when they fail is most often impractical: due to their low cost, it is easier to replace them with new ones.

Automatic headlights

The relevance of turning on the headlights in automatic mode is due to the fact that many drivers forget to turn on the dipped beam in the daytime (which is prescribed by traffic rules) and as a result receive fines. In Russia, such a requirement appeared for the first time in 2005 and at first applied only to movement outside settlements. Since 2010, all drivers are required to turn on the dipped beam or dimensions while driving: this measure is designed to improve road safety.

Those drivers who do not trust their own memory perform a simple modification of the VAZ 2106 electrical circuit, as a result of which the low beam of the car turns on automatically. You can perform such an upgrade in many ways, and most often the meaning of the reconstruction is to ensure that the dipped beam turns on after starting the engine. This can be achieved, for example, by including a low beam relay in the generator circuit: this will require two additional relays, thanks to which it will be possible to control the headlights when the engine is on.

In order not to strain the memory and not to forget to turn on the neighbor, I set myself an automatic machine)) This “device” looks like this. Principle of operation: Started the engine - the dipped one turned on, turned it off - it went out. He raised the handbrake with the engine running - the headlights went out, released - they lit up. Disabling the dipped with the handbrake raised is convenient when autostarting. That is, the handbrake light off was removed and a power switch was added, respectively, one relay was removed. The low beam turns on after starting the engine and turns off when the ignition is turned off. The high beam is turned on by a regular steering column switch, but when it is turned on, the low beam does not go out, it turns out that the high beam shines into the distance, and the low beam additionally illuminates the space in front of the car.

There are other options for automatically turning on the headlights, for example, through an oil pressure sensor, and any car enthusiast can choose the most suitable method for themselves.

Headlight adjustment

VAZ 2106 cars leaving the assembly line fall into the hands of car owners with adjusted factory optics. However, during operation, the adjustments may be violated, as a result of which the safety and comfort of driving is reduced. Most often, the issue of headlight adjustment arises after accidents or repairs related to the replacement of body parts, springs, suspension struts, etc.

There are several ways to adjust the headlights of the VAZ 2106, the most preferable of which is regulation using high-precision optical stands. The operation of such devices is based, as a rule, on focusing a beam of light (coming from a car headlight) with an optical lens on a movable screen with adjustable markings. Using the stand, you can not only set the required angles of inclination of light beams, but also measure the intensity of light, as well as check the technical condition of the headlights.

If it is not possible to adjust the headlights in a specialized workshop using an optical stand, you can do it yourself. For adjustment, you will need a horizontal platform, the length of which will be about 10 m, the width - 3 m. In addition, you need to prepare a vertical screen (it can be a wall or a plywood shield measuring 2x1 m), on which special markings will be applied. Before proceeding with headlight adjustment, you should make sure that the tire pressure is correct, and place a load of 75 kg in the driver's seat (or put an assistant). After that you need:

  1. Place the car strictly opposite the screen at a distance of 5 m from it.
  2. Make markings on the screen by drawing a horizontal line through the points coinciding with the centers of the headlights, as well as additional horizontal lines that should pass through the centers of light spots (separately for internal and external headlights - 50 and 100 mm below the main horizontal, respectively). Draw vertical lines corresponding to the centers of the inner and outer headlights (the distance between the centers of the inner headlights is 840 mm, the outer ones are 1180 mm).

  3. Cover the right headlights with opaque material and turn on the dipped beam. If the left outer headlight is adjusted correctly, then the upper border of the light spot should coincide on the screen with a horizontal line drawn 100 mm below the horizontal corresponding to the centers of the headlights. The boundary lines of the horizontal and inclined parts of the light spot must intersect at points corresponding to the centers of the outer headlights.
  4. If necessary, adjust the left outer headlight horizontally using a screwdriver and the special adjusting screw located under the trim on top of the headlight.

Then you need to check the adjustment of the internal headlights. To do this, cover with an opaque material not only one of the headlights completely, but also the outer lamp of the second headlight, and then turn on the high beam. If the inner headlight is adjusted correctly, then the centers of the light lines will coincide with the points of intersection of the line drawn 50 mm below the horizontal corresponding to the centers of the headlights and the verticals passing through the points corresponding to the centers of the inner headlights. If adjustment of the interior headlights is required, this is done in the same way as for the exterior headlights.

Fog lights

In conditions of poor visibility caused by atmospheric phenomena, such as fog or thick snow, it can be difficult to do without such a useful addition to standard optics as fog lights. This type of headlights form a light beam directly above the road and do not shine on the thickness of snow or fog. The most demanded by the owners of the VAZ 2106 are domestic PTF OSVAR and Avtosvet, as well as imported Hella and BOSCH.

When installing PTF, one should be guided by the traffic rules, according to which there should be no more than two of this type of lamps on a passenger car and they should be located at least 25 cm from the road surface. PTF should work in conjunction with the dimensions and license plate illumination. It is necessary to connect the PTF through a relay, since a large current is supplied to them, which can disable the switch.
