Fiat Ulysse 2.0 16V JTD

Odysseus apparently seemed big enough to people in Turin to name "his" large limousine van after him. Yes, quotes are required; The story is already old (through the eyes of a car enthusiast), but still: the project is signed by the names of two concerns (Fiat, PSA), the production line is one, technically the car is one, there are four brands. , engines and versions in general. All types. And if you look back at the 9-year history of this model, it will be difficult to argue that this car is not popular.

The competition is not as diverse as, for example, among the lower middle class (Stilo ..), but it is not negligible, especially since Renault and Espace slept far ahead of others in Europe. But Ulysse has found its place: with a characteristic, even more conventional form of the exterior, and especially with the other - a sliding pair of side doors. This divides people into two poles: the first, which finds it too “delivered”, and the second, free from encumbrance, sees in it only a very good practical solution for entering a large interior.

The test Ulysse had a seven-seat look that inspired confidence. With the exception of the two front ones, they are a little less luxurious, but again not so much that it significantly affects the well-being at medium distances. It is clear that Ulysse (like its competitors) is not a bus. This is a more spacious passenger car and you need to know about it in advance. However, it offers (again like the competition) good interior flexibility: the three seats in the second row are individually adjustable fore and aft, all the last five seats are easy to remove (although they are heavy and therefore awkward to carry), and the bottom is perfectly flat. . Thus, the possibilities of combining the number of passengers and the amount of luggage are significant.

The view from the front seats - if you notice the test of the better equipped Citroën C8 2.2 HDi (AM23 / 2002) - shows the equipment hierarchy; in this Ulysse the air conditioning was (only) manual, there was no leather on the steering wheel, and there was no electric power to move the sliding side door. And what else. However, it was equipped with six airbags, an on-board computer and a good (acoustically and technically) audio system (Clarion). The saying "less money, less music" sounds awkward here, but it makes a lot more sense if you don't understand it too directly.

The base is equally pleasing: the steering wheel is nicely vertical (but unfortunately only adjustable in height), the seat is nice in shape and stiffness, the gear lever is precise and comfortable enough, and if you're not sportier you may be happy with an engine like this.

His name is JTD, but of course he isn't. In fact, the HDi is a Peugeot or Citroën version of the turbodiesel with direct fuel injection, based on the common rail system. However, there is a lot of work to be done in front of a modern car (which only collides with another in sub-zero temperatures in the morning and still resists a bit); he struggles with a mass of more than one and a half tons and with a frontal surface caught perfectly perpendicular, a little less than 1 meter wide and three-quarters of a meter high. It's not easy for him. In the city of its 9 Newton meters it is easy to struggle with the desires of the driver for a long time, but it is a completely different matter on the highway, where 270 kilowatts quickly rise. Any climb at the legally limited and reasonably allowed maximum speed quickly gains power. Even in the countryside, overtaking is not carefree; it's good to know where and when the engine works best.

As long as you drive such a motorized Ulysses without special driving requirements, it will have a modest consumption: up to 10 liters in rural areas, and about 11 liters on the highway. However, with a slight increase in requirements, the consumption will jump noticeably, since the engine will have to be accelerated to 4100 rpm. So: if you recognize yourself in the second case, you might be better off considering a two deciliter larger engine that offers much better performance.

But the willingness to serve passengers is not diminished by this; On the other hand, Odysseus, Jason and other gangs like them would be doing well. If you are targeting a similar car, most likely too.
