Ford Fusion 1.6i Trend

The updated Fusion retains all the advantages of its predecessor. Roominess (for this class of cars), a fairly large luggage compartment with a low loading edge and a large loading opening, semi-off-road clearance and dimensions that are painted on the skin for all drivers who have a lot in common with traffic jams. The Fusion has been slightly revamped, the front now has a slightly off-road mask and front bumper, the turn signals on the headlights have been illuminated with orange glass, and the taillights have been (slightly) redesigned.

Ford has made more progress in the interior, where the top of the dash is made of rubber that feels good to the touch and is no longer dull and rough. During the update, digital fuel and temperature gauges were shot down - instead of them they are classic. More beautiful and, most importantly, always in sight. The new ones aren't original in terms of design, but we can't blame them for being sleepy and old-fashioned, as we did with the previous ones in Auto Shop's Fusion test at no. 5 years 2003

The storage areas are mostly the same, although we don't understand why none of them are covered in, say, rubber to keep items from rolling off as you move. Above the interior, which, by the way, is not illuminated, there is a three-section shelf for storing things. A more serious can holder is missing, as a removable trash bin is only an emergency solution. The middle part of the toolbar is no longer a chapter on its own, but merges into the whole. Changed the button to turn on all the turn signals, different ventilation nozzles, and everything else is connected to the Fusion before the repair.

The steering wheel is adjustable in height, just like the driver's seat, so you should have no problem finding a comfortable driving position. The new Fusion retains the ride quality of its predecessor. More comfortable than many small cars, with lateral and longitudinal tilting of the body during more dynamic driving, but therefore with a convincing driving position. And with a good and accurate gearbox, which was given a very long fourth gear at the factory; it is ideal for those who do not want to switch, as it can be used for driving in settlements (at a good 1 km / h and 6 rpm) or for exceeding motorway limit values (at 50 km / h) and in combined with a 1.750 liter petrol engine. and 150 rpm).

This exaggeration results in more fuel consumption and less engine agility, which in the test was a bit disappointing with the high average fuel consumption (the overall average test was 8 liters at 7 km). Longer fourth gear means fifth is primarily for fuel economy. The reasons for the increased consumption lie in the engine (100 hp at 101 rpm and 6.000 Nm at 146 rpm), a long-standing familiar of the Ford fleet, which is "real" only in the upper half of the speed, and is reluctant to operate in the lower rotational range. When he wakes up, he constantly pulls up to 4.000 rpm, reaching maximum power. The lowest fuel consumption in the test was 6.000 liters at 8 kilometers, and the highest required an additional liter for the same distance.

Ford is clearly convinced that Fusion customers do not take to heart the fact that the tailgate cannot be opened from the outside except with a key, since the refreshed Fusion is on the same level as its predecessor. With bags full in hand, there is no choice but to find the key or press a button on the dashboard to access the luggage compartment. It's a shame the Fusion also didn't get a longitudinally movable rear bench after the overhaul, as with that solution it would undoubtedly be king of its class.

Thus, the variability of the passenger and luggage compartment is still limited by the folding rear seat (60/40) and the folding backrest of the front right seat, which allows for the transport of longer items. The box, which is very well hidden under the front passenger seat (seat), is still a piece of equipment.

Nothing has changed in opening the fuel tank either. Thus, the refueling process still starts with the key that opens the tank cap. In the test, they didn't turn out to be wipers, because after the job was done, they wiped the windshield over and over again and smeared anything that could be smudged. On a very cold morning, however, the heated mirrors proved to be easier to maneuver thanks to the cuboid Fusion due to their size and heated windshield, eliminating the morning ice scraper.

Electric power in the Trend package also moves the front side windows, braking is supported by ABS with brake force distribution, the communicative steering wheel and shifter are wrapped in leather, and the CD stereo system provides good sound. The Fusion test charged extra for automatic air conditioning (SIT 42.700), heated windshield (SIT 48.698, 68.369), side airbags (SIT 72.687; front as standard) and metallic paint (SIT XNUMX).

Nothing really was missing from the equipment, not even the steering wheel to control the audio system. The rear bench has its own roof light, which the Fusion already had before the refurbishment. The trip computer does not display the current fuel consumption status, but it can be used for all other parameters. Since we were driving the Fusion at a time when the temperature was low, red and orange snowflakes often lit up next to the sensors. The second occurs when the outside temperature drops below five degrees Celsius, and the first occurs when the temperature is below zero.

It is longer, wider and taller than the updated Ford Fiesta. Small on the outside and spacious on the inside. Due to the fact that the belly is more millimeters from the ground than its competitors, it can comfortably carry passengers even where the roads are in poor condition. The updated Fusion has enough good features to attract customers. The worst qualities are not so great that it is impossible to live with them. I would choose it with a different engine, as 1 liter gasoline requires too much food for its performance. It is true that it is the strongest in the offer, but by no means the most economical.

There are three more to choose from (1-liter petrol and 4- and 1-liter TDCi), among which you can definitely find the best choice. It just depends on what you want Fusion for.

evaluation

  • The updated Fusion has retained all the advantages of its predecessor, including spaciousness and good directional stability. We were only at times frustrated with an overly thirsty engine that isn't too lively in the lower rev range. I love the refreshed interior that no longer gets boring and with which the Fusion remains an interesting choice in its class.
