The composition of tire sealants and the principle of operation

Initially, sealants for tubeless tires are a military development. In combat conditions, a tire puncture can be fatal. Gradually, these funds migrated to civilian transport.

Tire sealants are a mixture of liquid rubbers and polymers, often reinforced with carbon fibers, which have the property of curing when exposed to oxygen in confined spaces. The mechanism of action of these agents does not allow them to harden while inside the tire, since the molecular structure is in constant motion. Repair tanks contain a mixture of gases that should inflate the wheel when used.

When a puncture is formed in the tire, the agent is expelled by air pressure through the hole formed. The diameter of the resulting hole often does not exceed 5 mm. The sealant, flowing through the puncture, is fixed on its walls from the perimeter to the center and hardens. Due to the fact that the thickness of a standard tire at its thinnest point is not less than 3 mm and the diameter of the puncture is usually small, the tunnel formed in the rubber at the site of damage allows the product to form a solid plug.

The maximum puncture diameter that tire sealant can handle is 4-6mm (depending on the manufacturer). At the same time, the tool works effectively only on punctures in the area of \u2b\uXNUMXbthe sole of the tire, especially in areas of the tread ridges. A conventional tire filler will not eliminate side cuts, since the thickness of the rubber in this area is minimal. And to form a cork, the sealant does not have enough surface area on the walls of the puncture to securely fix and cure. Exceptions are point side punctures with a diameter of not more than XNUMX mm.

How to use tire sealant?

Anti-puncture tires in the traditional sense are means of preventive action. This means that they need to be filled when the tire is not yet damaged. Usually they are called tire fillers. But there are also sealants that are poured after a puncture. In this case, they are called tire repair sealants.

Tire fillers are poured into a cold wheel. That is, it is necessary for the car to stand for some time after the trip. To refuel the anti-puncture preventive action, you need to unscrew the spool from the tire valve and wait until all the air has left the wheel. After that, the sealant is thoroughly shaken and poured into the tire through the valve. Please note that you need to fill in exactly as much product as the manufacturer recommends for your tire size. If the sealant is poured, this will lead to a significant unbalance of the wheel. If underfilling, the anti-puncture may not work.

After filling the product and inflating the tire, you need to drive several kilometers at a speed of 60-80 km / h. This is necessary so that the sealant is evenly distributed over the inner surface of the tire. After that, if there is a noticeable beating of the wheel, balancing is needed. If no imbalance is observed, this procedure can be neglected.

Repair sealants are pumped into the tire after a puncture. Before pumping, remove the foreign object from the puncture if it is still in the tire. Repair sealants are usually sold in bottles with a nozzle to connect to the tire valve and are pumped under pressure into the wheel. The principle of their action is similar to preventive anti-puncture.

It must be understood that tire sealant is not a highly effective and durable remedy in the fight against punctures. It is impossible to predict how long the cork formed by the sealant will last in the hole on the tire. Most often it is enough for several tens of kilometers. Although in some cases, such a cork lasts a couple of years. Therefore, after a puncture, it is advisable to go to a tire fitting as soon as possible, clean the wheel of sealant residues and put a regular patch on the puncture site.

Sealants known in the Russian Federation and their characteristics

Let's take a brief look at anti-punctures popular in Russia.

  1. Hi-Gear Tire Doc. Preventive sealant, which, according to the instructions, is poured into the chamber before a puncture. Although it can be used after damage. Available in three capacities: 240 ml (for passenger car tires), 360 ml (for SUVs and small trucks) and 480 ml (for trucks). The composition is supplemented with carbon fibers, which increase the strength of the cork and its service life before destruction. Designed to work with punctures up to 6 mm. The price on the market is from 500 rubles per bottle of 240 ml.
  2. Antiprocol ABRO. Sold in 340 ml bottles. The tool belongs to the repair, and as a preventive tire filler ABRO is usually not used. The agent polymerizes within a few hours after being injected into the tire and will not be able to eliminate air leakage in the event of a puncture. It is completed with a nozzle with a carving for wrapping on the fitting of a wheel. It is pumped under pressure into the tire after a puncture. The price is about 700 rubles.

  1. Liqui Moly tire repair spray. Quite expensive, but, judging by the reviews of motorists, an effective repair sealant. Sold in a 500 ml metal aerosol can. It costs about 1000 rubles. Injected into a damaged tire. Due to the initially high pressure in the cylinder, often after filling it does not require additional pumping of the wheel.
  2. Comma Tire Seal. Repair sealant. Produced in aerosol cans with a volume of 400 ml with a threaded nozzle for wrapping on a wheel fitting. According to the principle of action, this remedy is similar to the ABRO anti-puncture, however, judging by the reviews, it is somewhat less effective. It costs an average of 500 rubles per bottle.

Similar funds are produced by other companies. Their principle of operation and method of use in all cases is approximately the same. The difference lies in the efficiency, which is proportional to the price.
