Jaguar XE 2.0T R-Sport

But the path to premium limousine buyers is certainly not an easy one. Many competitors know this, and in the end, the leading German trio, which is a kind of reference point and source of inspiration for all other brands when they try to catch up or even overtake it. The last one is difficult. There is also a Slovenian proverb among cars that a habit is an iron shirt, which means that buyers are much more loyal to their brand, especially in the premium class.

Moreover, others are dumbfounded, avoided and even slandered if I choose one of the softer words. That's why Jaguar's experiment with the new XE is both bold and challenging. About six months ago, we tested the diesel version in the Auto store (issue 17 2015). With a powerful new diesel engine loud enough for a premium class. Or lame soundproofing. The latter is not such a problem with gasoline engines? This time the test Jaguar had a 2-litre petrol engine under the hood and was fitted with R-Sport equipment. It's written on the skin of sports car fans and makes the Jaguar XE much more dynamic and, it's safe to say, even more attractive. However, the latter is quite difficult, as the attractiveness of the design is its big advantage. But the R-Sport equipment enhances the exterior with a different grille, bumper, side sills and eventually 18-inch 5-spoke aluminum wheels. No matter how we look at the car, it is cute and promising. There was nothing special in the interior. The R-Sport package brings a lot of new things on its own, and the additional equipment has made it truly prestigious. Red leather cases in general, although I admit that (we) don't like them all the most. The automatic transmission could also be controlled by sequential shifting using levers on the steering wheel. The driver was helped, in particular, by the control system for slow movement on slippery surfaces, the Jaguar Drive Control system, which offers a choice of driving programs (Eco, Winter, Normal, Sport) and (not the most successful) laser projection. screen. The Meridian Audio system, the electrically adjustable panoramic roof, the dimming interior mirror and finally the above average heated seats (especially the front two) as well as the steering wheel made the ride more comfortable and enjoyable.

In short, a real "premium" package. All is well, but many say that the engine is the heart of the car. The 200-litre petrol engine holds promise as it boasts 100 horsepower. The technical data also does not disappoint when it shows that it takes 7,7 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 237 km / h, and the top speed is XNUMX km / h. But in driving the latter somehow does not give results. The tested Jaguar turned out to be a fast car, but not very cheerful. Somehow, somewhere, the feeling of speed was lost, and especially the feeling of decisive acceleration. I admit that some might even like it, but it definitely broke the sound of the engine again.

If we were somehow logically disappointed by the (too) loud diesel, this time the gasoline engine might even be too quiet. Or too little. The interaction between gearbox and engine was also not perfect. In normal or sport driving mode, the start was too abrupt, the most comfortable way to drive was the winter program. But riding in the winter program in the summer is a bit unusual, isn't it? The chassis is also hard to praise. Especially when compared with competitors. If we single out from the big three only competitors with the same drive as the XE, that is, with the latter, BMW and Mercedes (with more than different car prices) will bring much better driving sensations, as well as the engine-transmission-chassis are better. ... So we can safely say that the Jaguar XE is definitely premium for the price, but by no means (at least not yet) with the engine and chassis.

But on the other hand, it impresses with its design, which for many is much more important than the capabilities that the average driver never realizes and does not fully exploit. As such, the Jaguar XE definitely stands out from the crowd, especially in a positive, but unfortunately also in a negative way. It depends on the potential buyer whether he decides or finds out what is more important to him.
