The timing cover protects parts such as the timing belt, timing chain and gears inside your vehicle. They are made of plastic, metal, or a combination of synthetic materials. In modern vehicles, covers are designed to seal the end of the cylinder block to keep debris and other unwanted materials from getting inside the engine. In addition, the cap helps keep the various parts inside the engine lubricated with oil.

Located at the front of the engine, the timing cover covers the toothed belts at the points where the crankshaft and camshafts pass. This helps protect the timing belt from damage and prolong its life. On some vehicles, the timing cover consists of several different parts that make up one cover.

Over time, the timing cover can wear out, which can be potentially dangerous due to the fact that it protects all parts of the engine. The biggest sign that your timing cover is failing or failing is when the engine starts leaking oil. This can be seen on the garage floor, under the car, or on the engine when you open the hood of the car.

Once you start noticing an oil leak, it's important to have a professional mechanic replace the timing cover. If this is not done, the timing belt may slip off the pulleys and the engine may be seriously damaged. It's best to repair the timing cover before this happens because engine repairs can be very expensive compared to replacing the timing cover.

Since the timing cover can fail over time, you should be aware of the symptoms that indicate that the timing cover is nearing the end of its life.

Signs that indicate the need to replace the timing cover include:

  • Grinding sound coming from the engine when the car is moving

  • Engine oil leaking from car

  • Missing timestamps that show up as reduced power when climbing steep slopes.

This repair should not be delayed because it can severely damage your engine and render your vehicle unusable.
