How long do catalytic converters last?

As a car owner, you should always be on the lookout for a few yearly car tasks. But, unfortunately, even with good car maintenance, over time, serious problems will still arise when we drive our cars. One such vehicle maintenance task is to replace the catalytic converter.

You may remember that the catalytic converter is the part of the exhaust system that is responsible for converting harmful emissions into less harmless gases that can be released. Needless to say, a car's catalytic converter is essential for the proper operation of the exhaust system. Without it, your vehicle will contribute to poor air quality and likely break state law.

Service life of the catalytic converter

So, it's pretty obvious that your catalytic converter is important. But how long does a catalyst last? The catalytic converter is supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle, but this is not always the case. It's safer to assume that the catalytic converter will last up to 10 years or more. Of course, cars are becoming more modern and innovative, making them more durable and environmentally friendly every year.

What breaks a catalytic converter?

If catalytic converters are supposed to last the lifetime of a car, but they don't, what causes them to fail sooner? Like most parts of a car, overuse can cause them to wear out. In particular, the catalytic converter may be clogged, contaminated with coolant, or physically damaged (especially as a result of accidents). A car cannot last forever, and one of the reasons for this is the wear of the catalytic converter.

Another sad reality is that catalytic converters can be stolen and the theft is on the rise. You must install an anti-theft device, use a unique security registration code, and check the vehicle's security to protect the catalytic converter. Your car could very well be one of your three biggest assets, so take the proper steps to protect its longevity.

Symptoms of a Failed Catalytic Converter

Hopefully you don't expect to have your catalytic converter repaired or replaced in the near future. However, you should never be too careful to be aware of signs that may indicate that your converter is nearing the end of its life. Here are the main signs of a bad catalytic converter:

  • Engine misfire
  • Bad smell from the exhaust
  • Check if the engine light is on
  • Car starting problems
  • Less fuel efficiency

If you consistently notice any of the above problems, feel free to bring your car in for maintenance. This is a problem that you will want to identify and take action as early as possible.
