Your vehicle uses a number of different components to help control the amount of vibration you and your passengers experience while driving. One of them is a flexible coupling-steering damper. Specifically, this part reduces the vibration you feel on the steering wheel. This provides a smoother and more comfortable ride. These vibrations are generated when your wheels hit the ground and then travel through the car's suspension system, steering components, and the steering column itself.

The flexible coupling is equipped with an important rubber disc, and it is this disc that is able to absorb these vibrations, so you will not feel them in the wheel. It also helps the driver turn the steering column more easily. Unfortunately, this part is not designed to last the lifetime of your vehicle, so over time it will need to be replaced. It is recommended that when working on the suspension or steering on your vehicle, the mechanic also inspects your flexible coupling. What happens over time is that it wears out, breaks and/or seizes. Once this happens, your steering will make a noticeable difference.

Here are some warning signs that may indicate that it's time to replace the flexible coupling steering damper.

  • You may notice that your steering wheel doesn't just return to center on its own, as it normally should. This could be a sign that your flexible coupling is broken or stuck.

  • When you turn the steering wheel from side to side, you may hear a clanking sound. Again, this is a sign that your flexible coupling needs to be checked.

  • Another warning sign is that your steering may feel like it's locked up. This will happen more and more often as your flexible coupling continues to fail.

  • Keep in mind that since your steering will be heavily affected, it may interfere with your ability to respond to other motorists, pedestrians, and just everyday obstacles. That's why it's important to replace it immediately.

The flexible coupling plays a big role in making the steering smooth and vibration-free. At the same time, it helps you to control the steering wheel. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms and suspect that the flexible coupling steering damper needs to be replaced, have a diagnosis or have a certified mechanic replace the flexible coupling steering damper.
