How to Minimize Noise from Roof Straps

It is not always necessary to have a truck, van or trailer to carry large items; You can tie many things directly to the roof of your car, including luggage, kayaks, or some furniture while driving. While this can solve the logistical problem of getting a large item from one location to another without borrowing or renting a larger vehicle, the belts can actually make a lot of noise when driving at higher speeds.

If you are only driving short distances this may not be a problem, but for longer distances you need to keep this noise to a minimum. The secret to reducing noise from roofing straps lies in proper fastening technique.

Part 1 of 1. Noise Reduction

Step 1: Install the item on the roof of the car. Place the item you wish to transport directly on the roof of the vehicle, making sure it is center aligned both front to back and side to side.

If you don't already have a roof rack installed on your vehicle's roof, place a blanket or other form of cushioning, such as Styrofoam blocks, between the item and the roof to prevent scratches.

  • Functions: If you are tying multiple items to the roof, place the largest one at the bottom and the smallest one at the top. This will prevent slipping while driving and reduce possible noise caused by shifting.

Step 2: Twist the strap. Rotate each strap on the side to dampen noise while the vehicle is in motion.

This simple trick uses aerodynamics to create the least amount of force on the belts when you're riding at high speed and greatly reduces overall noise.

Step 3: Make sure the straps are tight. Tighten the straps carefully. If they are loose they will rattle more when your vehicle is in motion.

Loose belts also put your load at risk of falling, which can not only destroy your belongings but also lead to accidents.

Step 4: Secure the Loose Ends. Due to the length of the straps, it is necessary to secure the loose ends.

You can easily do this by closing the car door on the loose ends. This holds the belt securely in place, preventing it from twisting while the vehicle is in motion.

  • Functions: Another option is to tie the two long risers together so they stay in place. If the strap ends are smaller, simply tuck them under the strap. If this is not possible, then the end of the strap is probably not long enough to make a sound and is no longer a problem.

Reducing distracting noises while driving is just one reason why you need to be careful and use proper technique when attaching bulky items to your vehicle's roof. Whipping and rattling noises can be a source of annoyance, but the noise is also an indication that your straps and items are not properly secured, which is a safety issue. So always make sure that large items are securely fastened and stop periodically to check for loose belts, especially if your trip is going to be long. You are doing yourself and others a favor. If you really want the peace of mind associated with comfort and safety, don't be afraid to deepen your understanding of how roof straps work.
