How to turn off the car alarm

The car alarm can be disabled by starting the car, unlocking the car door, or disconnecting the battery. Save your key fob to cancel future alarms.

There are few things more embarrassing (or more annoying if it's your neighbor's car) than a car alarm that won't turn off. There are a number of reasons why your car alarm won't turn off and a few different methods you can use to drown out the squeal and end the embarrassment.

Part 1 of 1: Turn off the car alarm

Necessary materials

  • Needle nose pliers (or fuse puller)
  • User's Guide

Step 1: Familiarize yourself with the alarm. While this may not seem like a good time to read the user manual, in many cases the problem is user error. Make sure you follow the correct procedure for turning off the alarm.

Step 2: Start the car. Insert the key into the ignition and try to start the car. Almost all alarms, both factory and aftermarket, are disabled and reset when the vehicle is started.

Step 3: Use your key to unlock the driver's door. This usually disables and resets the alarm. If the driver's side door is already unlocked, lock it and then unlock it again.

Step 4: Pull out the fuse. The factory installed alarm has a fuse in the fuse box; pull the fuse to cut the circuit and disable the alarm.

Locate the fuse box on the left side of the steering column. Fuse boxes usually have a fuse diagram on the fuse box cover.

Most signal fuses have an alarm label. If the fuse is not marked, refer to the owner's manual for the location of the alarm fuse.

  • Functions: Some vehicles have multiple fuse boxes - check your owner's manual for the location of the various fuse boxes.

Remove the fuse. If the alarm goes off, you have pulled the correct fuse. If the alarm does not turn off, reset the fuse and try another one until you find the correct fuse.

Once the alarm goes off, reset the fuse and see if that resets the system. If the alarm works again, it's time to call the master to repair it.

If the alarm system is an aftermarket item, look for the fuse in the engine bay. Check your user manual if you can't find the fuse.

Step 5: Disconnect the battery. This is a last resort as this will reset all of the vehicle's electrical systems and your vehicle will not start until the battery is reconnected.

Disconnect the negative terminal (black) from the battery. The alarm should go off immediately.

Wait a minute or two and reconnect the battery. Let's hope the alarm resets and doesn't turn on again. If so, try disconnecting the battery cable again.

  • FunctionsA: If this does not work, leave the battery cable disconnected and have a mechanic or alarm installer repair the system.

Step 6: Support the keychain. Most modern cars use a key fob to lock and unlock doors and turn off the alarm. Unfortunately, the key fob will not work if the batteries are dead or it simply does not work.

  • If you have to press the unlock or lock button on your key fob several times before it will work, the battery is probably dead and needs to be replaced. A defective key fob should be replaced as soon as possible.

Hopefully, if you took the steps above, the alarm stopped screeching and all the dirty looks from the neighbors stopped. If it was necessary to unhook the battery to turn off the alarm, a professional mechanic, for example from AvtoTachki, should inspect the entire system to make sure everything is working properly.
