How to polish the headlights on the car yourself, instruction and video

No matter how expensive a car you own, from constant vibration all its body parts lose their attractiveness over time. The headlights are especially difficult, microcracks form on the plastic, dust and water get into them, the “look” of the car becomes foggy. This is not only ugly, but also dangerous, because the optical power of the headlight deteriorates, the light flux loses direction. In addition, the light of just such damaged headlights blinds oncoming drivers most of all.

There are several ways to polish the headlights, and the easiest of them is to send the car to a service where everything will be done in full. But if you want to polish the headlights yourself, then, in principle, there is nothing complicated in this. The sequence of actions is the simplest:

• we remove the headlights, if possible, many modern manufacturers produce cars with complete headlights, that is, removing such optics is already a separate problem, so you can polish them without removing them, in which case we paste over all the elements adjacent to the headlight - a bumper, a radiator grill , the hood - with masking tape, you can paste over in several layers, so that later you don’t have to think about how to get rid of scratches;
• thoroughly wash the headlights with shampoo, you need to remove all dust and grains of sand so that they do not leave scratches during polishing;
• we take a grinder (you can use a drill with a special nozzle), or we work manually, with 1500 grit sandpaper we completely remove the layer damaged by microcracks; so that the surface of the plastic does not overheat, periodically moisten it with water from a bottle;
• sanding with sandpaper with even less grit - 2000 and 4000; when the surface is completely free of cracks, the headlight will become cloudy - as it should be.

And then you need to polish the headlight with a soft sponge, which is coated with grinding paste. Pasta is better to buy two types with larger and smaller grain sizes. If you work with a grinder or a drill with a nozzle, then the whole process will take no more than 15-20 minutes, you will have to sweat a little manually. If matte spots remain on the surface, then the process is not completed, we repeat everything again. Ideally, the headlight will become absolutely smooth and transparent.

At the final stage, you can use a finishing polish, which is enough to wipe the optics for five minutes. As a result, your headlights will be as good as new, and the focus of the beam will be optimal. Remember to remove all traces of polish from the surface and remove the masking tape.
