How to Transfer Ownership of a Car in All States

Title is a document certifying ownership of a vehicle. Whenever you buy a car, you will be given a title deed in your name as proof that the car belongs to you. Likewise, whenever you sell a vehicle, the name must change from your name to the name of the new owner. This is true regardless of whether the vehicle has a clean or refurbished title.

If you are buying or selling a car through a dealership, the process is very simple because the dealer will most likely do all the paperwork to prove ownership of the car for you. However, if you buy a vehicle from an independent seller, sell your vehicle to an independent buyer, inherit or give away the vehicle, you are responsible for the transfer of ownership of the vehicle.

The title transfer process depends on the state you are in. Depending on where you are located, this can be done online, by mail, or through a Department of Motor Vehicles office or division. Title change fees also vary by state, as does the information you need to provide in order to transfer. Luckily, transferring a title is a relatively simple and straightforward task no matter what state you live in.
