What is a render?

Stucco, also known as stucco, is a type of plaster used on exterior walls and is usually three parts stucco sand and one part cement along with a waterproofing agent. You can buy a render in different colors or paint over it later. You can use two or three render layers. The first coat is most commonly referred to as the primer coat, the second coat as the brown coat, and the top coat as the top coat. Grouting can be carried out on the second layer and, if there is one, on the third, depending on what kind of finish is required.

The first layer (surface) acts as the base for the next layer and does not need to be smoothed down, so we will start with the second, or brown, layer.

Step 1 - Check if the render is ready

After applying the second render layer (brown layer), wait until it starts to set. This can take from an hour to half a day, depending on the weather, the type of render and its thickness. When the render is ready to go, it should feel slightly spongy to the touch, but not so soft as to leave fingerprints.

Step 2 - Straightening the render

Pull a long piece of wood, called a feather edge or straight edge, across the wall to roughly straighten it. Fill in any large holes and cracks with a spatula.

Many plasterers also like to draw on the wall at this stage. You need to hold the darby almost flat against the wall, sharp edge down, at an angle of about 45 degrees. Slowly pull the darby up, pressing firmly against the render to level the surface as much as possible.

Step 3 - Render Alignment

Use a wooden or plastic trowel in a circular sweeping motion to level the surface, pressing the trowel firmly against the wall to even out the plaster. This will fill in any depressions and level out the highs.

Step 4 - Float Top

After applying the brown coat, wait a week to ten days for the surface to harden and fill any resulting cracks before applying the top coat. When it begins to harden, take a hard rubber trowel and press it against the wall in a circular motion to compact the plaster and make it as flat as possible.

Step 5 - Improve the finish

Use a lightly dampened sponge grater for perfect results. The sponge gently moves the material so any remaining small cracks and holes will be filled in and the surface will look much smoother.

Step 6 - Add Texture

If texture is required, you can use a nail grater to scratch the wall. This is easiest to do on the same day as applying the render, before it has fully cured. Pressing firmly on the float, move up and down the wall in a circular brushing motion.
