BMW Comfort Access Technology was introduced in 2002 as a remote keyless system that uses sensors to determine where the owner is in close proximity to the car within 1.5 meters (about 5 feet), allowing him or her to access car and trunk with virtually no hands. . As the technology has improved since 2002, instead of pressing the unlock button on the key to unlock the car (keyless entry), the owner just has to walk up to the car, put their hand on the door and it will open. At the rear of the car, there are sensors under the rear bumper and when the owner swipes his or her foot under it, he or she can access the trunk.

In addition, when the smart key system detects the driver inside, it unlocks the stop/start button, which turns the car on or off. If the system detects that the owner has left the car, he can lock it by simply touching the door handle from the outside.

Finally, the smart key can store up to 11 individual settings for the seat, steering wheel and mirrors. Whether you own a newer or older BMW model, the information below will show you the steps you need to take to use Comfort Access technology without problems.

Method 1 of 1: Using BMW Comfort Access Technology

Step 1: Lock and unlock doors. If you have an older version of BMW that does not have door sensors, you will have to press the appropriate button for each function.

To open the door, simply touch the top arrow button. Once you hear the car horn two or three times, the driver's side door will open; touch the button again to open the passenger doors. To lock the doors, press the center button, which is the round BMW logo.

Step 2: Get to the car and grab the handle. Just walk up to the car with the smart key in one of the pockets and touch the inside of the handle to open the door.

To lock the door again, get out of the car with the key in your pocket and touch the ribbed sensor on the top right side of the handle and it will lock. If you have the more advanced Comfort Access technology on a newer BMW, you don't have to press the buttons on the key, but you can if you wish.

  • Functions: If you are unsure of the level of comfort access technology your vehicle is equipped with, refer to your vehicle's owner's manual.

Step 3. Access the trunk on older models. Just press the bottom button on the smart key, which should have a car image on it, and the trunk will open.

Step 4Unlock with Comfort Access. Walk up to the trunk with the smart key in your pocket, slide your foot under the rear bumper and the trunk will open.

Step 5: Start your car with the old version. With the key in the ignition, the buttons up and your foot on the brake, press and release the start/stop ignition button.

This button is located to the right of the steering wheel, and after pressing it once, the car should start.

Step 6: Start the car with a newer version. With the smart key in the center console pocket and with your foot on the brake, press and release the Start/Stop button.

It's to the right of the steering wheel. Press it once and the car should start.

Step 7: Downgrade to an older version. With the vehicle parked and the parking brake applied, press and release the Start/Stop button once.

The engine should turn off. When the engine is turned off, first press the key inward and then pull it outward to release it and put it in a safe place so as not to lose it. When leaving, remember to lock the car by pressing the center button on the smart key.

Step 8: Switch to a newer version. Park the vehicle, apply the parking brake and press and release the Start/Stop button once.

When leaving the car, remember to take the smart key with you and remember to lock it by touching the top right side of the handle from the outside.

BMW Comfort Access technology is useful to everyone when they bring groceries home and have their hands full, or even just for general ease and convenience. If you're having trouble with Comfort Access, see your mechanic for helpful advice and be sure to have your battery checked if you notice it's behaving unusually.
