How to get a driver's license in Georgia

Georgia is another state that has a certified driver's license program, which is required in most states. This program states that those under the age of 18 must obtain a student's permit, which gradually develops into a full license as the driver gains experience and age to drive legally in the state. To get a driver's license, you need to follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driving license in Georgia:

Student permission

To obtain a learner's permit in Georgia, a potential driver must be at least 15 years old and must either attend high school or hold a diploma or GED. Any driver under the age of 17 who wishes to obtain a learner's license must complete a driver training program.

When driving with a learner's license, the driver must comply with certain laws. All driving must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age, who must remain in the front passenger seat and be sober and alert. This person must certify that the driver has completed at least 40 hours of driving instruction under their supervision, including at least six hours at night. In addition, a driver's license for learning to drive can be revoked for a driver under the age of 18 if he stops attending school, is guilty of absenteeism or misbehaves at school.

In order to obtain a learner's permit, Georgia requires prospective drivers to bring several required legal documents to the exam; obtain a parental consent signature; pass two written exams and an eye test; provide proof of completion of a driver training program and proof of high school attendance or diploma; and pay the required fee of $10.

Required documents

When you arrive at the Georgia DMV for your driver's license exam, you must bring the following legal documents:

  • Two proof of address, such as a bank statement or school report card.

  • Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or a valid US passport.

  • One proof of Social Security number, such as a Social Security card or Form W-2.

Exam

To obtain permission to study in Georgia, you must pass two exams. The first is the Highway Code Test, which covers 20 questions about the state's traffic laws as well as general questions about safe driving. The second is the road signs test, which includes 20 questions on all road signs and signs. To pass the exam, drivers must correctly answer 15 out of 20 questions in each exam.

The Georgia Driver's Guide contains all the information a student needs to pass the exam. Taking the online practice exam can help students get some extra practice before taking the exam.

If a driver fails one of the exams, he cannot retake the exam until the next day. If they fail a second time, they must wait a week and pay $10 to retake the exam.
