To save wasted time, cars are equipped with a remote engine start system. This is a function, and there can be several ways to implement it.
Pros and cons of remote car start
The positive aspects of installing an autorun, whether as a stand-alone unit or as part of a regular or additional security system, are determined by the needs of the driver:
- the car is ready for the trip by the time the owner appears, the interior, seats, mirrors, steering wheel and windows are warmed up, the engine has reached an acceptable temperature;
- no need to waste time on useless waiting in the cold or in a cabin that has frozen overnight;
- the engine does not freeze to a critical temperature, after which it is generally problematic to start it;
- you can conveniently choose the moments of switching on and off the motor, periodically or once;
- no need to spend money on installing autonomous heaters, which are quite expensive and massive.
But there are also enough inconveniences and negative consequences:
- the engine wears out during numerous cold starts and idling;
- a lot of fuel is consumed, more than that of autonomous heating due to the characteristics of the engine efficiency, it is not intended for its own heating and maintaining the temperature in the cabin, it is optimized for the minimum fuel consumption for driving a car, especially diesel and turbocharged modern engines;
- the battery is subjected to additional load, it is intensively discharged when the starter is running, and charging at idle is insufficient, especially for a cooled battery;
- the anti-theft security of the car is reduced;
- engine oil quickly ages and wears out, which most owners do not know about, and no one does express analyzes, it is already necessary to change it at a mileage half of the nominal, which in turn is half that recommended by the factory, this is a feature of long idling ;
- warming up engines for a long time at idle in residential areas is prohibited by law;
- elements of the fuel system and spark plugs coke;
- dangerous errors are not ruled out when introducing external devices into the complex on-board electronics of a car;
- the car has to be left on the hand brake, which in some cases threatens to freeze the pads.
Despite the large number of cons, consumer advantages usually outweigh, the operation of the car should be as comfortable as possible, for which many are willing to pay.
The principle of the system
Through a remote radio channel from the key fob, when a button is pressed or at the command of a programmable timer, and sometimes through a cellular network, a command is sent to start the engine.
The auto start electronic unit performs all the necessary procedures, warms up the glow plugs in the case of a diesel engine, activates the starter and controls the appearance of stable operation, after which the starter turns off.
The engine runs normally at first at increased warm-up speed, then resets to normal idle.
The desired interior heating or cooling devices remain switched on in advance. The immobilizer is activated, the car must remain with the transmission open and on the parking brake.
The doors are locked, and the security system continues to operate, allowing only the operation of the engine and some electrical equipment.
It is very convenient when the car is equipped with a launch through a mobile application, cellular communication and the Internet. This removes all issues with the range of the radio channel and the presence of numerous programmable service functions.

All such complexes consist of an electronic unit, a remote control, software and wiring for connecting to the car's information network. The channel can be own or via cellular connection with a SIM card.
The system can be part of an installed alarm system, a standard option for this car model, or a completely autonomous one purchased as an accessory. The interface of the electronic unit has a connection with the engine ECU, through which all commands are received.
How to use auto start engine
Before setting the machine in the remote engine start mode, it is necessary, in accordance with the instructions, to ensure the transmission is in neutral or park. The handbrake must be applied.
The car is armed in a regular way. If desired, the heater operation mode is activated, the fan turns on at the desired speed. Autostart is programmed to the desired mode and activated.
Do not use the system unnecessarily. Its disadvantages are described in sufficient detail above, it makes sense to minimize them.
Fuel additives will also help, helping the engine injectors not to coke at long idle. It is advisable to pick up winter candles, but this should be done carefully, according to the recommendations of a specialist. An abnormal glow number can damage the motor at maximum loads.
The battery must be regularly checked and recharged from an external source. Short winter trips with cold electrolyte are not enough to maintain energy balance.
How to install an engine remote start system
Autostart kits are sold as a standalone version, if such a function is not included in the alarm system.
The choice is wide, you can choose a system with feedback radio key fobs or a GSM interface, many channels for controlling heating and engine control units, controlling the amount of fuel and battery charge.
It will be useful to provide for a bypass of the immobilizer, leaving a spare key in the car is unsafe.
The device is quite complex, at the level of the most serious security systems, so self-installation is hardly desirable.
Such systems should be installed by specialists. There are dangers of fire, theft and simply incorrect operation.
You can seriously damage the electronics of the car with installation errors. Only a qualified and experienced master who has undergone training will cope with such work. Electrical knowledge alone is not enough.
