How does nitrogen work in a car?

When choosing a nitrogen kit for your vehicle, it is important to consider the condition of your engine. A worn out and poorly tuned vehicle will not be able to withstand NOS pressure and will instead be damaged by abnormal wear and tear.

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a slightly sweet smell. Also known as laughing gas for its euphoric effect, nitrogen is also known as NOS after the well-known brand of nitrous oxide injection systems.

A direct result of using nitrous oxide injection is additional power to your vehicle. This results in better energy harvesting from fuel combustion, increased engine speed and ultimately improved overall vehicle performance.

How does nitrogen work in a car?

Nitrous oxide works on the same principle as sodium chlorate when heated. It is made up of two parts nitrogen and one part oxygen (N2O). When nitrous oxide is heated to about 570 degrees Fahrenheit, it breaks down into oxygen and nitrogen. Thus, injecting nitrous oxide into the engine results in an increase in available oxygen during combustion. Because more oxygen is available during combustion, the engine can also consume more fuel and therefore generate more power. Thus, nitrous oxide is one of the easiest ways to significantly increase the power of any gasoline engine.

On the other hand, when pressurized nitrous oxide is injected into the intake manifold, it boils and evaporates. As a result, nitrous oxide has a significant cooling effect on the intake air. Due to the cooling effect, the intake air temperature is reduced from 60 to 75 Fº. This in turn increases the density of the air and hence the higher oxygen concentration inside the balloon. This generates additional energy.

As a standard rule of thumb, every 10F reduction in charge air temperature at the intake results in a 1% increase in power. For example, a 350 hp engine. with a 70 F drop in intake temperature will gain about 25 hp. only due to the cooling effect.

Finally, the nitrogen released during the heating process also maintains performance. Since nitrogen absorbs the increased pressure in the cylinder, it ultimately controls the combustion process.

Modifications to help nitrogen

Forged aluminum pistons are one of the best nitrogen supplement mods. Other major modifications may include a forged crankshaft, a high quality racing connecting rod, a special high performance fuel pump to meet the additional fuel requirements of the nitrous system, and high specific gravity racing fuel with an octane rating of 110 or more. .
