How to choose a LoJack system for your car

LoJack is the trade name for a radio transmitter technology system that allows vehicles to be tracked if they have been moved in an undesirable manner or have been stolen. LoJack's trademarked technology is the only one on the market used directly by the police who track and attempt to recover the vehicle in question. The manufacturer's website claims that a stolen car with LoJack technology has a recovery rate of about 90%, compared to about 12% for cars without it.

Once a person purchases a LoJack and installs it in a vehicle, it is activated with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), other descriptive information, and then registered with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database used by law enforcement throughout the United States . . If a theft report is sent to the police, the police make a normal database report entry, which then activates the LoJack system. From there, the LoJack system starts sending signals to the tracking technology installed in some police cars. Every police car within a 3 to 5 mile radius will be alerted to the location and description of the stolen vehicle, and the signal is strong enough to penetrate underground garages, thick foliage, and shipping containers.

Part 1 of 2. Determine if LoJack is right for you

Determining whether LoJack is right for your vehicle depends on a number of questions. Is LoJack available in your region? * How old is the car? * How vulnerable to theft? * Does the vehicle have its own tracking system? * Does the price of the car justify the cost of buying and installing a LoJack system (which usually sells for a few hundred dollars).

The correct option for you will be obvious once you sort the variables needed to make a decision. If you decide that LoJack is right for you, read the information below to understand what steps you can take to choose the right LoJack option.

Part 2 of 2: Choosing the LoJack Option for You

Step 1: Check if LoJack is available to you. Before buying, make sure you have done all the necessary research.

  • First, you definitely want to know if LoJack is available where you live.
  • FunctionsA: To see if LoJack is available in your area, go to the "Check Coverage" page on their website.

  • Whether you are buying a new car or looking to purchase a system for an existing car, you can determine how much LoJack will cost you in relation to the value of the car. If you have an old car that isn't worth a lot of money, you may want to consider other options. On the other hand, if you have a construction machine worth over $100,000, LoJack might seem more attractive.

  • Also, take a look at your insurance payments. Does your policy already cover theft? If yes, how much money do you cover? If not, how much will the upgrade cost? You might want to ask similar questions if your vehicle is equipped with OnStar technology, which offers vehicle theft recovery and more.

Step 2: Choose the package that suits your needs. If you have decided that LoJack is available in your area and that it is the best option for you, decide which package you need. LoJack offers a range of different packages and options that you can purchase for cars, trucks, classic vehicles, fleets (taxi), construction and commercial equipment and more.

You can purchase items online, directly through the website, or if you are interested in buying a new car and have decided which brand you are going to buy, you can enter your five-digit zip code. If options are available from your local dealer, the information will be displayed below.
