How to remove a stuck cylinder head bolt

Removing the cylinder head is hard work. Running into frozen cylinder head bolts makes the job even more difficult. Fortunately, there are tricks on how to unscrew the cylinder head thrust bolt that will make your life much easier.

Method 1 of 3: Use a breaker

Necessary materials

  • Jumper (optional)
  • Protective gloves
  • Repair manuals
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Use a breaker. Head bolts are usually very tight.

One way to loosen really tight head bolts is to use a broken bar. This method allows you to use more force than a traditional ratchet and socket.

Method 2 of 3: use impact force

Necessary materials

  • impact wrench
  • Protective gloves
  • Repair manuals
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Use Impact. You can hit the center or head of the bolt with a chisel or punch to try and remove corrosion between the threads.

An alternative approach to this method is to use the impact wrench on the bolt several times in both forward and reverse directions.

Method 3 of 3: Drilling out the bolt

Necessary materials

  • bit
  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Protective gloves
  • Repair manuals
  • Safety glasses
  • Screw extractor

Step 1: Make a notch at the top of the bolt.. Use a hammer and punch to make a notch at the top of the bolt.

This serves as a guide for the drill.

Step 2: Drill the Bolt. Use a drill bit one size larger than the hole made by the chisel to drill straight through the bolt.

Then drill the bolt again using a drill bit that can drill a hole large enough for a screw extractor or easy extraction.

Step 3: Remove the bolt. Drive a special extractor or screw extractor into the drilled hole.

Then turn the tool counterclockwise to remove the bolt. You may need to hold the tool head with a pipe wrench or pliers.

Removing and repairing heads is best left to professionals. As you can see, a task can become very frustrating if things don't go according to plan. If you prefer to entrust cylinder head repair to professionals, call AvtoTachki specialists.
