How to replace a car throttle cable

Throttle cables connect the accelerator pedal to the throttle plate. This cable opens the throttle and lets air into the engine for acceleration.

Many modern vehicles use an electronically controlled throttle system, affectionately referred to as "electric actuation". However, there are still vehicles on the road equipped with traditional mechanical throttle cables, also known as accelerator cables.

The mechanical throttle cable is used to connect the accelerator pedal to the engine throttle. When the driver presses the pedal, the cable opens the throttle, allowing air to flow into the engine.

In most cases, the throttle cable will last the lifetime of the vehicle. However, in some cases, the cable may need to be replaced due to stretching, breaking, or bending.

Part 1 of 3: Locate the throttle cable

To safely and effectively replace a throttle cable, you'll need a few basic tools:

  • Free Repair Manuals - Autozone provides free online repair manuals for certain makes and models.
  • Protective gloves
  • Chilton repair manuals (optional)
  • Safety glasses

Step 1 Locate the throttle cable.. One end of the throttle cable is located in the engine compartment and is attached to the throttle body.

The other end is on the floor on the driver's side, attached to the accelerator pedal.

Part 2 of 3: Remove the throttle cable

Step 1: Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle body.. This is usually done by either pushing the throttle bracket forward and pulling the cable through the slotted hole, or prying off the small retaining clip with a screwdriver.

Step 2: Disconnect the throttle cable from the retaining bracket.. Disconnect the throttle cable from the bracket that holds it to the intake manifold by pressing in on the tabs and wiggling it.

Alternatively, it may have a small retaining clip that needs to be pry off with a screwdriver.

Step 3: Run the Throttle Cable Through the Firewall. Pull a new cable from the engine compartment into the passenger compartment.

Step 4: Disconnecting the throttle cable from the accelerator pedal. Typically, the throttle cable is disconnected from the accelerator pedal by lifting the pedal up and passing the cable through a slot.

Part 3 of 3: Install the new cable

Step 1Push the new cable through the firewall. Push the new cable through the firewall into the engine bay.

Step 2: Connect the new cable to the accelerator pedal.. Pass the new cable through the slot in the accelerator pedal.

Step 3: Connect the throttle cable to the retaining bracket.. Reattach the throttle cable to the bracket by pressing on the tabs and jiggling it, or by pushing it into place and securing it with a clip.

Step 4: Reattach the throttle cable to the throttle body.. Reconnect the throttle cable by either sliding the throttle bracket forward and pulling the cable through the slotted hole, or by inserting it into place and securing it with a clip.

That's it - you should now have a perfectly functioning throttle cable. If for some reason you do not want to do this work yourself, the AvtoTachki team offers a qualified throttle cable replacement service (https://www.AvtoTachki.com/services/accelerator-cable-replacement).
