What are the benefits of refueling a car

Frequent economic crises and inflation make motorists think about the possibility of using alternative fuels. Electric and hybrid cars are too expensive for middle-class people. Therefore, the ideal option is to convert the car to gas.

Before proceeding with the search for a workshop, you need to decide what equipment to install. After all, there are several types of gases. And is it even worth switching to HBO?

Which gas to choose

MethanePropan

As an alternative to gasoline, propane or methane is used. These substances have different densities and structures; therefore, their use requires different settings. What is the difference between methane and propane?

Propane

Propane (1)

Propane is an organic volatile substance that is formed as a result of the processing of petroleum products. To make it usable as a fuel, the gas is mixed with ethane and butane. It is explosive at concentrations above 2% in air.

Propane contains many impurities, therefore, for use in engines it needs high-quality filtration. At gas stations, liquefied propane is used. The maximum allowable pressure in the vehicle's cylinder is 15 atmospheres.

Methane

Methane (1)

Methane has a natural origin, while it does not have a characteristic odor. A small amount of substances is added to its composition so that a leak can be recognized. Unlike propane, methane has a large compression ratio (up to 250 atmospheres). This gas also has a lower degree of explosion hazard. It ignites at a 4% concentration in air.

Since methane is cleaner than propane, it does not need a complex filtration system. However, due to the high degree of compression, it requires the use of especially strong cylinders. Since it contains a minimum amount of impurities, the installation operating on this fuel leads to less engine wear.

The following video provides detailed information about which NGV fuel is better to use.

Switching to HBO Propane or Methane, which is better? Usage experience.

The main advantages of HBO

There are heated debates among motorists regarding the use of gas equipment. Some believe that refueling does not harm the engine. Others are convinced of the opposite. What are the advantages of using HBO?

  1. Environmental friendliness. Since methane and propane contain less impurities, emissions are more environmentally friendly.
  2. Price. Compared to gasoline and diesel, the cost of gas refueling is less.
  3. The quality of combustion. The volatiles used in refueling cars have a high octane rating. Therefore, for their ignition a small spark is enough. They mix faster with air. Therefore, the portion burns completely.
  4. Minimal risk of engine detonation when the ignition is turned off.
  5. No need to buy a car adapted for gas. It is enough to find the service station, whose employees are able to properly install the equipment.
  6. The transition from gas to gas is not difficult. If the driver has not calculated the supply of fuel-efficient fuel, he can take advantage of the reserve from the gas tank.

Comparison of methane and propane plants:

  Propane Methane
Economy compared to gasoline 2 times 3 times
The price of installing HBO Low High
Average fuel consumption per 100 km. (the exact figure depends on the engine size) 11 liters 8 cubes
Enough tank volume (depends on version) From 600 km. Until 350
Environmentally friendly High Absolute
Reduced engine power (compared to the gasoline counterpart) Up to 5 percent Up to 30 percent
Octane number 100 110

Refueling with propane today is not difficult. The availability of gas stations is the same as gas stations. In the case of methane, the picture is different. In large cities, there are one or two gas stations. Small towns may not have such stations at all.

Disadvantages of HBO

GBO1 (1)

Despite the many advantages of gas equipment, gasoline is still a key fuel for cars. And here are some reasons for this.

  1. Gas will do less harm to the engine if the machine from the factory is adapted to this type of fuel. Converted motors need to adjust the valves a little more often than when using gasoline.
  2. To use gas as fuel, it is necessary to install additional equipment. In the case of propane HBO, this amount is small. But the methane plant is expensive, because it uses not liquefied gas, but a substance under high pressure.
  3. When switching from gasoline to gas, the power of some engines decreases markedly.
  4. Motorists do not recommend warming up the engine on gas. This process should go as smoothly as possible. Especially in winter. Since the octane number of gas is higher than that of gasoline, the cylinder walls heat up sharply.
  5. The economy of HBO also depends on the temperature of the fuel. The higher it is, the easier it is to ignite the mixture. Therefore, the motor still needs to be heated with gasoline. Otherwise, the fuel will fly into the pipe literally.

Is it worth putting gas equipment on a car

Of course, each motorist himself decides how his car will refuel. As you can see, HBO has its advantages, but the equipment requires additional maintenance. The motorist must calculate how quickly the investment will pay off in his case.

The following video dispels the basic myths about installing HBO and helps determine whether to switch to it or not:

Questions and answers:

How is gas measured in a car? Unlike liquid fuels (gasoline or diesel only in liters), gas for cars is measured in cubic meters (for methane). Liquefied gas (propane-butane) is measured in liters.

What is car gas? It is a gaseous fuel that is used as an alternative or primary fuel type. Methane is highly compressed, while propane-butane is in a liquefied and refrigerated state.
