The rules are clear: children must travel in a car in a car seat. And it is worth remembering not only about avoiding a fine during a possible inspection, but above all about the safety of our children. This applies to children under 12 years of age up to 150 cm.
The seat can be installed both behind and in front of the car. However, in the second case, do not forget to turn off the airbag (usually with the key in the glove compartment or on the side of the dashboard after opening the passenger door).
The regulations also stipulate what to do when this is not possible: "It is prohibited for the driver of a vehicle to transport a rear-facing child in a child seat in the front seat of a vehicle equipped with a passenger airbag."
Car seats for the smallest children are best installed with the head in the direction of travel. Thus, the risk of injuries to the spine and head is reduced in case of a small impact or even sudden braking, causing large overloads.
For babies weighing from 10 to 13 kg, manufacturers offer cradle-shaped seats. They are easy to take out of the car and carry with the child. Child seats weighing between 9 and 18 kg have their own seat belts and we only use car seats to attach the seat to the sofa.
When a child reaches the age of twelve, the obligation to use the seat ceases. However, if your baby's height, despite his age, does not exceed 150 cm, it would be wiser to use special stands. Thanks to them, the child sits a little higher and can be fastened with seat belts, which do not work well for people less than one and a half meters tall.
When buying a seat, pay attention to whether it has a certificate that guarantees safety. According to EU rules, each model must pass a crash test in accordance with the ECE R44/04 standard. Car seats that don't have this label shouldn't be sold, but that doesn't mean they don't. Therefore, it is better to avoid buying on exchanges, auctions and other unreliable sources. Every year the German ADAC publishes the test results of chairs, awarding them with stars. Before making a purchase, it is recommended to track this rating.
In order for the seat to fulfill its role, it must be properly sized for the child. Most products are equipped with a system for adjusting the height of the headrests and side covers, but if the child has outgrown this seat, it must be replaced with a new one.
When our car is equipped with the Isofix system, we should look for car seats adapted to it. This term is defined as a special attachment that allows you to quickly and safely install a seat in a car without the use of seat belts. Isofix consists of two fastening hooks integrated with the seat and permanently fixed in the car, corresponding handles, as well as special guides to facilitate assembly.
